This hotel's most positive point is its location : at the water, with a nice view over the lagoon and next to a small shopping center.
We booked a 'superior room' with a view over the lagoon. Room was quite basic though, but we had what we needed.

Our family (two adults, two kids 4 & 5) was quite pleased with the Protea Knysna Quays - we did not have great expectations of it, since we had been cautioned by our SA travel agent that it conformed to the basic Protea brand - clean, comfortable, functional, good value for the price it was at.
We liked the location right at the Kynsna Quays. The disadvantage is that the restaurants on the quay are much more expensive than the ones on Main street, althought the quality of sea food they served was excellent. Since the hotel serves only breakfast, if you weren't willing to walk into town, you had to dish out this extra cost to dine at one of the three/four quay restaurants right by the hotel.
We wish we had stayed in the Garden Route longer than the three days we did, since there was so much to see and do - Outdshoorn, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma, Cape Argul. And George might have been a better location to be based out of than Knysna.
But we had no regrets about our choice of hotel.
My husband and I stayed here for three nights of a three week holiday to S.A. The hotel is functional only and really has no character/atmosphere. The hotel serves breakfast only but room service menus from three offsite restaurants are available in the bedrooms.... or so we thought. My husband was ill one of the days and so I tried to order from the room, however none of the restaurants were willing to deliver in high season (or when they are busy), a fact the hotel omitted to tell us on check and was not indicated on any brochure in the room. Very annoying! Knysna itself was very disappointing. It is one of the most popular destinations but is overcrowded, way overpriced and in our opinion over-rated. We were sorry we didn't stay in the much more majestic Wilderness.
