“Very enjoyable.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2009

This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend who is a local. We went to 'The Gecko', which is next door, for drinks first and to watch the sunset. The barman was very friendly, and asked if we would be eating in the restaurant. As we were, he said not to worry about the bill, we could settle it with our meal. He also took our wine through for us when we were ready to eat.
We knew we wanted Newton Johnson wine (as it's delicious and local!). We chatted about the wine, and found him to be really friendly & accommodating. The Gecko is nice because seals play in the surf below the balcony, which you can watch whilst the sun goes down.
The actual restaurant was really warm and inviting. It was very quiet, so we were offered whichever table we wanted. We sat by the window as it was still dusk, and the views are beautiful. Our waiter was really friendly & accommodating. For some reason our napkins were damp, and he was very apologetic whilst immediately replacing them.
We asked lots of questions about the menu contents, which he was happy and able to answer. He suggested a fish platter for two, and said we could change the combination to more of one fish and less of another, depending on what you prefer. This was a great suggestion, and we ended up with a huge plate of freshly caught salmon (the best I've ever tasted!), lots of massive prawns, and an assortment of other fish. We also had vegetables and rice. It really was delicious and very memorable.
It was good value for money, and well worth a visit.

“Good, but didn't 'rock my boat'...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2009

We had been recommended The Rock as a lunch venue by some local friends. On arrival we found the welcome a little 'cold' - it was St. Valentine's Day and despite the restaurant being quite quiet, we were offered a table inside, but not at the window. The views are lovely from this establishment, so a window seat would have made a difference...
The service was on the slow side - at the END of the meal we were offered a complimentary glass of wine, but it took so long to come, that we ended up leaving before it came!
The food was nice, but I feel overpriced.
This could be a fabulous restaurant if the service and general friendliness of the staff improved. I would recommend the venue, but feel there are other, better offerings in Hermanus, with equally stunning views, food and service.

“Like water to the thirsty!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2008

Seeing as we live in the Little Karoo, we jump at any chance to savour great seafood. There were 6 of us in the party, and whilst none of us had dessert, there was not much conversation during the meal except for a few moans of pleasure whilst loading the fork for another bite.

For starters I had oysters and sushi, which were wonderfully fresh and mains were lemon sole. Grilled to perfection and a good size too. My husband had the battered prawns (tempuri prawns I may be mistaken?) for starters. My only recommendation is that they add this as a main and double the amount - absolutely delicious!

Excellent service, a great complementary wine list to the food on offer, and yay, a table set for 6 that could easily have sat 8. Room to move! Thank you Harbour Rock for quenching our thirst for seafood and making the evening special. Keep it up. We will definitely come back!
