“Great views and accommodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

This was the second stop on our Garden Route holiday and I was really impressed by the Abalone Guest House.

The welcome was lovely and the whole place was really homely. We had room 1 which has amazing sea views from 2 balconies, great decor and was very comfortable. We could sit on the balcony and watch the whales swim by.

It's a good half hour walk into the centre of Hermanus but the coastal path is a fantastic walk and not strenuous. Whale watching boats go out regularly and we were lucky enough to get some close sightings of humpbacks, southern right whales and bryde whales.

Breakfast was lovely, shame it was a bit chilly to sit out on the terrace, but a great start to each day. Lovely place to stay overall and highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 1 - amazing views from a corner room with 2 balconies. Worth the extra in whale season.

My wife and I stayed 2 nights at the end of our Garden Route tour, and during the Hermanus Whale Festival. We had a ground floor room without a view, but with the coastal path a short walk away this did not concern us. Breakast on the terrace in the sunshine with whales playing in the bay could not be bettered. Jill had had the good sense to pre-book some restaurants which we took advantage of. We had pre-booked a whale watching trip with Southhern Rights Charters which we thought was excellent value, even if the number of visible whales was less than hoped. You need a car or taxi to get to the centre of Hermanus, a short drive away, which was buzzing with the Festival in full swing. The perfect location for whale watching.

Room Tip: If you can, get an upper floor sea view corner room

Only a limited number of rooms have a bay view. Ours didn't, we did however have a large room, slightly dated decor but comfortable and clean. Some road noise. Distant views of the bay from the communal lounge/dining area. It an easy stroll from the lodge to the cliff top to view whales. This was a big advantage. Unfortunately on arrival we were a bit surprised that no help what so ever was offerred to help us with our luggage, even with the smalled bags. Getting these all up the flight of stairs was annoying and not welcoming. Our arrival reception was a bit colder than we expected. Room facilities were quite good. The complimentary biscuits were in a jar but one was half eaten when we arrived and they weren't replenished during our stay. Adjoining doors for some people might mean privacy was impacted, for us it wasnt a problem because our friends were in the next room. Shared room balcony was not that private either. Breakfast was what we expected, it was good, nice bread rolls, but if you were on the later side of the dining time they seemed to run out of the good ones. Internet coverage was very limited but they did have a computer you could use but it was tucked away under some outside stairs and I thought could have been better located. A limited Gym was available. Glass of wine in the evening was a nice gesture. The lodge was a fair distance from town, you can walk if fit and it's along the coast path, so quite nice. The easy access to the bay was the highlight of this lodge, we were there after all to see whales.

Room Tip: Bay view rooms are more expensive, newer too, for some guests this might be important to request.

This is a great place to stay for a few reasons. One is the exceptional service by the staff especially Rose , who we found to be clued up on everything from restaurants to local fun things to do. Being right on the coastal walk made it easy to view whales whenever the urge took. The rooms were well appointed, though I still am not a fan of interconnecting doors. Breakfast was yummy and individually cooked for you. This lodge was excellent value for money.

Room Tip: There are two rooms that have a view of the ocean from their balconies so that would be the pick.

We arrived very tired after travelling for 24 hours but were given a warm welcome and even had a pot of tea made and brought in to us, there are facilities in the room to make your own hot drinks. The next morning it was absolutely magical to sit on the terrace eating breakfast watching the whales. The breakfast was very good, help yourself to juice, cereals, meats cheese etc. and then have a full english breakfast cooked to order. Our room had a garden view and also partial view of sea and was very close to cliff path. The bed was very comfortable and the under floor heating in the bathroom was very good. We were advised of a really good restaurant to eat that night and they also made the booking for us. It is a little distance from the centre of Hermanus but if we ever come back then this is definitely the place we would want to stay.

Our party of 6 stayed here for 2 nights in last week of August. We had a very warm welcome and all 3 rooms we had were very high standard. As others have said Abalone is as close to the shore of the bay as you can get and great for whale watching. Guesthouse is a good walk from main centre at Hermanus which is ok in daylight but probably not recommended at night. We got a 6 seater tut-tut taxi back from town both evenings, which was fun and cost very little. Breakfasts were very good and the honesty bar in the lounge was a nice touch. All in all a guesthouse we'd have no hesitation going back to or recommending to others.

We stayed here for three nights after a week in a Kruger game lodge. The welcome was warm and efficient with all the advice we needed on where to eat and what guests had thought of the restaurants in Hermanus. We went to three and found all of high quality.
There is of course no comparison between a bush camp and Abalone: different worlds. We found it very comfortable, totally secure and with access to a glorious garden, spectacular views of the bay and the whales, plus some of the loveliest birds we've ever seen at close range. Also, to have a spotted eagle owl swoop into the garden and "sit" on the border edging for almost two hours was astonishing.
The staff were all positive and efficient; we enjoyed conversations with the manager and the waitress from Worcester: a long journey for a weekend home. She talked about the owl with us and how her son loved the beaches. These details raise a very good place into the excellent category because they bring humanity into efficiency.
Thank you to everyone at Abalone.
