“Splendid Isolation!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2007

A magical setting for this country house hotel. A home from home (albeit with a little more luxury and refinement!) : the staff were superb - especially the lovely Louise. The food was excellent.
Great place to go whale watching at Hermanus - 20+ minutes away.
Highly recommended.

Stayed August 2006

Hello Selocar

Thank you for the kind review. We aim to be that "home away from home". We hope you will return home in the near future, so please, if you are in the Republic and near Hermanus, stop by

Warm Regards

Anton

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2007

We stayed here at the beginning of February 2007 and had a fantastic 3 nights. The estate is situated about 20 km inland from Hermanus and is an ideal base for exploring the Overberg. We learnt that the estate has been there for quite a few years initially offering self catering accommodation although over the last few years has had a major revamp and been made into a very contemporary place to stay.
We stayed in the ‘Honeymoon’ Suite, one of 4 rooms (?) located in the Manor House. The room was large, very comfortable and tastefully furnished without being too ‘Laura Ashley’. The room had its own small private walled garden and also a large ceramic bathtub in the room for a good soak! Small touches included the Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries, sherry aperitif placed in the room, followed by a carafe of port after the meal added that extra touch and attention to detail, plus it was also nice to come back and find the room had been turned over after you’d had your dinner.
The room rate at Blue Gum included afternoon tea (which we never had space to fit in) and dinner. The quality of the food was excellent (I may be wrong but we thought the menu may have worked on a 3 day cycle?). We also liked the suggested wines for each course which were on the menu, you could have these by either the glass or bottle. Sundowners and nibbles were served on the deck before dining.
All the staff were excellent, discretely attentive and very pleasant.
Most of the guests appeared to be British couples from a fairly wide age range (40’s to 70’s), and were a pretty decent and sociable bunch to have a natter with on the deck.
As the Blue Gum website says you can do as much or as little as you want here, it’s in an excellent position to explore the Overberg, Hermanus, Arniston or simply laze around under the Blue Glue trees with the occasional dip in the pool if you have the energy. There’s plenty of opportunity to go for a stroll around the estate or up the surrounding hillside and experience some spectacular views without putting too much effort in to it.
One comment we must make though was that our room was uncomfortably warm once the sun got up (tin roofs and low ceilings) and remained this way until the early hours of the morning even though a free standing fan was present in the room. We thought Blue Gum need to consider installing air conditioning in at least the Manor House.
And the last world, would we go back…….definately and hopefully wil do within the next 12 months!

Hello Mark and Jill

I am thrilled you enjoyed your stay and that it was the best stay of your holiday. We still have a lot of British travelers visiting us as well as many sparrows from Hermanus who join us for lunch frequently in the sunny summer months.

We still aim to provide that high level of attentive and warm service that one can only experience in South Africa.

We hope you will return one day soon

Kind Regards

Anton
