Everything at Birkenhead House "just happens". From the time of arrival to departure everything falls into place, seamlessly. We were greeted by a "welcoming posse" of no less than six members of staff.
We were shown around and the amenities are all very tasteful and of high quality.
The meals [prepared by Ziyaad and Pinky] and served by Sandile were superb. It is fantastic not to have to leave the premises to look for an eatery.
Fresh cake - pear, carrot, Lemingtons were put out everyday.
A fantastic touch is that your laundry is "gift wrapped" when it is returned!
We have suite 2, which is the suite to ask for.
All-in-all a most pleasant stay, made possible by very attentive staff who at the same time, are not intrusive - highly recommended!

Room Tip: Definitely Suite #2

Just had a 2 night stay here at this lovely hotel that sits right on top of a cliff with spectacular views. We were in room 2 which was lovely & spacious overlooking the ocean with a double balcony & amazing views.
The staff here are all excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. Hubby unfortunately put his back out so 1 of the beauty therapists came to our room to give him a massage. Dinner that night was delivered to our room - again without any problems at all.
The only issue we had was that we had no hot water until the morning of our departure. Maintenance came several times to try & resolve the issue. We were asked whether we had been using the underfloor heating. Then we we're hold that due to the number of guests the hot water had been used up. It wasn't until the night before we were leaving that maintenance remembered there was a switch outside on the roof that needed to be triggered. Regretfully unnecessary delays.
Having said that we were well looked after. Medicine was sourced by staff for hubby.
Food was absolutely delicious & presented beautifully & the service was excellent.
Would definitely return.

Room Tip: Room 2 is a lovely large room overlooking the ocean. Good sized shower with both over head rain show...

What a spectacular stay we had at Birkenhead. It was the first stop on a 2 week honeymoon, and couldn’t have been more perfect. From the moment we arrived and were given a glass of champagne it was the perfect place to relax and get some peace and down time. The food is incredible, with a different lunch and supper treat every day, but this is nothing compared to the staff. Every member of staff knew us by name, remembered our favourite drinks and treated us like a member of the family. Krist, Sandile, Lee and Ricardo, we cant thank you enough for making the trip so special. From the breakfasts on the cliff top to our surprise candle lit bath with champagne we had the most special time, and will be coming back for years.

We enjoyed three amazing nights at this property in early April. From the moment we arrived at our room (ocean front with the blissful sound of waves crashing) until we departed, we felt a peaceful, beautiful connection with this lovely property.

The bed - mattress -- was the most comfortable that we have slept in maybe EVER (including our own!) and leaving the patio doors open all night to hear the ocean was pure magic. Loved that everything was "all inclusive" including drinks and snacks in the room. Each and every request that we made was fulfilled.

We loved the pitchers of ice tea and water on the back patio that were always refilled and that we could sit and play games and have drinks on the patio overlooking the ocean in the afternoon.

Some improvements would include heating the pools; they looked beautiful, but we could not use them even on a hot day. The food was fantastic on the first day, but on the subsequent days, we had trouble accommodating the limited menu with dietary restrictions/food allergies. Especially would have loved to see more variety at breakfast. In the spa, we enjoyed the treatments but found the spa beds very basic for the level of the property. These comments are constructive as I hope to be back many many times, truly a 5 star experience.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 2 are the best!

As the other reviews suggest, this is fantastic. Having convinced my parents to finally come to South Africa with us, this was our first port of call. They were handed a drink on arrival and never looked back! We stayed in the house next to the main hotel, which I think was being sold in 2015, so may not be available any longer - but well worth it, if available. Rooms really large, great views and just a short walk downstairs for food and drink. The food and wine was amazing, catered for every request. We dined one night in the main hotel, but preferred our house for the space and peace. Nothing was too much trouble, even bringing the special port that my husband had started to the house for us!Highly recommend the walk to Hermanus - grab a drink there and get a lift back.
This was absolutely amazing and I wouldn't hesitate to return.

We stayed at the Birkenhead House over the Easter weekend. The service levels at this hotel are extremely high. In fact I don't think that I ever stayed at a hotel where there has been such good service and attention to detail.
The actual location of the property is breathtaking and I just loved the flow of the hotel. Even though the hotel was nearly full, you never felt over crowded.
Meal times are an amazing event each and every time. The menus are thoughtfully put together, and there was enough to choose from. The chef is also quite flexible if you would like to order something else. Sitting on the edge of the cliff terrace over looking the ocean at meal times are memorable.
A highly recommended 5 star experience.

Room Tip: Rooms i and 2 are the best sea facing rooms. 3 and 4 are side sea views but also good.

Our first time at Birkenhead House and we were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived our every need was taken care of. The luggage and car was taken care of by Eric and Lauren checked us in and took us on a tour of this amazing hotel. When we got to our room, number 2, we were blown away. The stunning views, enormous dressing room and stunning bathroom were more than we had hoped for. Food and wine were to a superb standard with good variety. For our second day we had mentioned we had planned a trip to Creation vineyard and were immediately offered transport to and from which meant we didn’t have to worry about tasting lots of wines. A pleasant surprise was that our driver turned out to be the Brandon the Chef, now that’s service!
Managers Shane and Corinne were always around making sure guests were happy.
We had a massage in the spa’s double treatment room given by Zanela and Leigh-Ann which was outstanding. In fact it was so good we booked another the following day!
So our stay was perfect and we wish we could have stayed longer but we will definitely return as this is a truly 5* hotel.
