My wife and I are novices to wine tasting but after sorting out a rough itinerary by e mail with Percy we had a fantastic day with him and he sorted out a great day for us which took in everything we wanted to do, he was a great guide knew his wines and the area really well and our lunch at creation with the canapé / wine option great way to eat and learn about wine, would recommend Percy tours to anyone in thee area

“Wine tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2014

Tanya was excellent on the tour. We met her early at 10am,' then proceeded on the wine route. She took us to the best estates in the valley. She had also booked us lunch at the lovely creations restuarant.
Having a driver was the best idea ever. It may seem expensive but if you consider risks of drinking and driving and the Tanya' s time, it was well worth it.

Amazing day out with Percy wine wasting in Hermanus. Great knowledge of the area, some of the wines far more superior than Franschoek. Highly recommend.

“Great way to enjoy the wines of the Hemel En Aarde”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2014

We took a full day wine tour with Percy in late November and would happily recommend him and his company to others. We were collected from our apartment in Hermanus at 10am and after a quick trip up Rotary Way to check out the spectacular panoramic views down to Hermanus and out over Walker Bay, we made our way into the valley for our 1st tasting at Bouchard Finlayson. From here we continued along the valley floor to our 2nd tasting at Newton Johnson before heading for our 3rd tasting and tasting lunch at Creation. After lunch our 4th stop of the day was at Sumaridge and our 5th and final tasting was at Hamilton Russell before Percy drove us and dropped us back off at our apartment in the late afternoon both suitably merry and also laden with wine purchases. (Some to drink while in SA and some to bring home and lay down)

Percy was good company throughout and easy to get along with while always ensuring we were having a good time with nothing being too much trouble, least of all our constant requests for him to act as photographer for the day. In terms of pricing, Percy offers a very flexible and somewhat unique, tiered structure. Instead of paying upfront for a half day or full day tour, you pay a set amount for the minimum period and then pay by the hour thereafter. I found this refreshing and civilised while also being quite cost effective and would give a greater degree of flexibility to those perhaps not wanting or not able to taste wine all day long. As Percy will attest, his is a mute point when referencing us :) 

Without trying to sound like a greedy wine guzzler, one thing I did notice is that the amount you are given to taste per glass is universally markedly smaller than I have been previously used to in other regions. At first I thought it was an anomaly of the wineries we visited but my parents visited earlier in the year and agreed. For those just out to enjoy the day this may be a positive as it will keep them from getting too 'merry' however for us it was a little disappointing as at times it can be tricky in one sip to fully pick up what’s required in deciding whether to place an order or not.

This is no reflection on Percy himself and in fact on one occasion when he was left to his own devices to ‘pour’ he ensured we had a ‘second opinion’ of those we liked and thus bought :) 

In terms of the valley itself I have to say it comes across as quite new and ‘under construction’ when compared to the likes of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek which both just seem to knit into the fabric of their respective valleys seamlessly as if they have been there forever. As you get further along the valley, the road is still being paved which adds to a sense of the immaturity of this area and of it being a work in progress as a wine region.

However, thankfully this immaturity does not transcend to the wine itself. The terroir of the area with the cool winds coming in over the valley from Walker Bay helps to provide ideal growing conditions for certain varietals which otherwise struggle to flourish in the dry heat of other regions of the cape. In particular we found several truly outstanding examples of Pinot Noir and thus for a wine lover the Hemel En Aarde makes for a great addition to any trip when aiming to discover the underrated wines of this beautiful country. If you choose to do so, with Percy you will be in very safe and capable hands

“Three day tour of Hermanus and Cape town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2014

We had an absolutely wonderful time. Percy was very friendly, punctual and knowledgeable. He was flexible in making last minute changes when necessary. It was a feeling of traveling with a relative and not just a tour guide.
