“Yummy local fish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2010

We stayed in Hermanus for one night and wanted a restaurant serving local fish.

We were recommended the Fisherman's Cottage. Initially when we arrived they said they were fully booked but luckily for us they receive a cancellation whilst we waited in the cosy bar area.

The menu contained exactly what we wanted - fresh local fish. But as well as that there was a good range of meat on there too.

I enjoyed the hake and calamari special.

The wine selection available was good and the waitress was knowledgeable about the best ones to complement our dishes.

Excellent food and staff but book so you're not disappointed.

“Delicious seafood platter at a very reasonable price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2010

A tiny restaurant serving much bigger meals! We had a gorgeous seafood platter here with prawns, calamari and yellowtail. It was huge and delicious. The menu was quite small, but there was something for everyone. The service was good, with no delay and a buzzing atmosphere. It was right in the centre of Hermanus, and had much more character than some of the places surrounding it.

“The Most Character in Hermanus”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2010

An old established 'pub' with a cosy little bar, and an eating area outside (covered in inclement weather) - excellent down to earth food incl fantastic sea-food at very fair prices - book ahead it's quite small. Wine choice not great but you can always BYOB

“Great atmosphere, but you need to be patient!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2010

We were hesitant about eating here, but it turned out to be one of the most memorable meals of the holiday! There are only a few tables so I would definitely advise booking a table. The kitchen is very small and easily overstretched; we did have to wait some time for each course to appear and the front of house/sole waiter was rushed off his feet all evening. Chicken livers got a big thumbs up from the other diners at our table (apparently the best they'd ever had) and the mussels were superb, certainly the biggest I've ever seen. As long as you're not in any rush, then this is a great spot for some well-priced and fresh seafood in Hermanus.

“Did the Lonely Planet listing go to their heads?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2010

This tiny “restaurant” was offering us the most unfriendliest welcome we have experienced during one month of travelling through SA. We arrived at 8pm for dinner – an appropriate hour for dining – many people were still eating and 3-4 tables were available. Not even started to really enter the place, one of the waiters (or the boss / manager himself!?) stopped us in the door case saying “Sorry guys, kitchen is closed, thank you and good bye”. Wow! A kitchen that closes on 8pm on a Friday night!?!?! We could not believe it and were still wondering in search of explanations. Meanwhile the guy had already opened the door to show us the way out. We were expecting an explanation (the cook is ill, or whatever) or something like “Thanks for your understanding, can we take your reservation for tomorrow?”, but he just closed the door behind us. This is definitely a place that has failed to cope with its listing as “our pick” in the Lonely Planet guide. We can NOT recommend this place – better go to Auberge Burgundy located 30m next to it.
