“The very last and most terrible night of our 17 day trip”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

Even though George lodge is fairly easy to find and the reception staff was decent ,this does not make up for the terrible night we had here. Especially since we paid quite a high price for staying here.

Also reading trough the other reviews the comments from the hotel staff as a reply are extremely unprofessional denial is not just a river in Egypt. Admitting your mistakes is the first step towards improvement.

Like previous reviewers already mentioned the mattresses feel like granite and are extremely uncomfortable. The bed was too short as well and there is no way that taller people can sleep in that bed. The room smelled very weird like the previous guest had left a personal aroma in the room.Or as my wife stated it "Is this the room or the fitness centre?"

The rooms themselves felt very dark and uncomfortable and the mirrors everywhere made it even stranger (mirrors in front of the master bed is very bad in Feng shui)

After our 6 hour long travel from Houtbay to George we wanted to take a swim. When we saw the swimming pool we passed immediately it's so disgusting and if the tourism grading council would visit this day I think the lodge would receive a formal warning. We could not see the bottom of the swimming pool it was filled with sand, stones and bugs. (photos will be added later on)

Also the gardens in front of the rooms were filled with trash (paper/plastic and even a half eaten orange was in the bushes lovely but we prefer a real garden over a landfill)

The breakfast did not taste nice at all and the service offered during the breakfast was cold and unfriendly. One of our group asked for some extra bacon and the lady looked at us like it was unheard of to ask for such a thing.

When we left no one asked us if we enjoyed our stay on our way home we received an SMS to give our opinion about George lodge international, we can give it in one simple word that pretty much sums it all up:

AVOID

Dear Guests

It give us great pleasure in sharing the latest upgrades at the George Lodge to you. With reference to the complaints about our beds we have now equipped all our beds with slumber pads, which ensures that the bed is soft and comfortable with the option of removing that for guests who prefer a harder mattress. Furthermore we have revamped our whole breakfast area and conference centre have added some delicious dishes to our already scrumptious menu.

We have also enhanced our security and for the peace of mind of our clients have surrounded our parking area with palisades as well as electric fencing.

We now also have a lovely bon fireplace at our swimming pool where you can enjoy the ambiance of the cool winter evenings.

We look forward in having you back as guests to enjoy all the new additions at our Lodge

On arrival, all looked neat and tidy. However we soon realised a few issues, first of all how uncomfortable the beds were and then our window did not shut. In fairness, they moved us to another room. The rooms were neatly decorated however when switching on our heater, the TV then switched off! This provided some amusement until realising that it was too cold not to have the heater on. The bathrooms could do with some heating too and maybe a bit of redecorating.
Breakfast was OK however served by a unwelcoming lady.

We refer to our previous correspondence and reiterate that the beds conform to the requirements as stipulate by the South African Tourism Grading Coundil. We find the scenariou with the TV and heater quiet funny, on inspection we found the the two run on seperate wall plugs and try as we may were unable to duplicate the actions as described, myth busted. We apologise for the windown not being able to close. We found that a screw was missing and have replaced it.

With regards to the heating of the bathrooms, we are only a 3 star graded establishment, this is usually reserved for five star and higher graded establishments. (heated bathrooms)

We have attended to the staff issue regarding there unfriendliness as perceived by your group (previous review part of same group). As u know the morning at breakfast there was a "private birthday party " for one of the gentleman in your group and we did not want to intrude on your privateness furthermore, I was chatting to you in reception about your wedding and where you guys are from etc.

This was the most expensive hotel of our holiday and the worst by far. The pick up from the airport at George was the only good thing about this place. The beds were so hard the mattress had no give in at all. The rooms were freezing and the heater was an old thing which when turned on lit up the whole room. There were curly hairs in the bed and the whole room and bathroom was grubby and dated. The bathroom door was old and rusty and the cold tap feel off in the bath. The breakfast was OK but the lady who served looked so miserable. The reception could not find a record of our deposit and they asked us to produce proof of the payment, lucky we had printed it off. No one asked us if we had a nice stay, they did not care at all. I would never go again.

In reply to the review we have noted the contents thereof and reply as follows. We have once again just had our establishment graded by the South African Tourism Grading council who have found our establishment within the three star grading.

Our mattresses are of the best quality and are accepted as the norm for 3 to 4 star graded establishemnt. The heater supplied is fo the standard 2 bar heater which is more than adequate for the size of the room. Due to the design of the unit is will automatically light up the room to some extent. (extra bedding is supplied in the cupboard, each bed has a blanket, duvet and through as well as extra blanket supplied in the cupboard - also bearing in mind we are in the middle of winter now)

We apologize for any curly hairs found in the bed, if any, our linen is washed and ironed on a daily basis. Our bathroom has been passed by the Tourism Coundil and meets with 3 str grading requirements.

With regards to the record of proof of deposit. The guest booked through nightsbridge booking system and their wording states that we are to obtain the guests permission to debit their credit card for the deposit, we did not take off any deposit from the client's credit card. The guest did not agree with this as he was under the impression that we did take the deposit, we asked him for proof of that which he could not provide as he was from the UK. We agreed when het got back home to England he would check and advise, we therefor only charged him the balance of the booking in the meantime. To date we have not received the deposit nor heard anything from the guest.

The guests was a group of 8 - 10 people and we have not heard any negative comments from the others. In fact some of the party, bride and groom were in reception the following morning talking with management and staff whilst the deposit problem was being sorted out.

On inspection of the room after departing of the guest it was found that the mattress had been SOILED either by the guest or child. It was wet right thru to the base of the mattress, we pressume it was urine. This was not brought to our attention by the guest, but was discovered by our cleaners on departure of the guest.

We thank you.

I made a late reservation at the George Lodge and was pleasantly surprised at the comfortable room and convenient location. I particularly enjoyed the good breakfast and appreciated their effort to my allergy related dietary requirements.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2009

I have to start by saying I have not yet slept in the George Lodge but I have been dealing with them for some time now. I am assisting my best friend with her Wedding that will be held in George in April 2009. 90% of all Accommodation we are booking with The George Lodge International.

From the very first Phone Call Jennilee (one of the receptionists) has been amazing. Quoting me via email with-in minutes and staying in contact with me throughout the booking process.

As you can imagine trying to get people booked and organized when they are coming from 4 different continents can be fun but very stressful and I could not have felt as comfortable had it not been for Jennilee.

We asked if we could come by in January and check out the Lodge and we where invited without hesitation to show up when it bests suits us. We showed up hours earlier than what we had anticipated, yet there was no problem. The Receptionist on duty (sadly not Jennilee but we will get to meet her soon) took us to go see a number of different rooms and was even willing to show us more but we where already sold!

I have to say with this pre-arrival service the rest can only be fantastic.

Thank you guys!
