Every time we visit my sister-in-law in Constantia we always stay at the Alphen. It has changed over the years and has been refurbished into a much hipper rendition of its former self. But the colonial atmosphere and Cape Dutch atmosphere still remain. The rooms are amazing and huge, with his and her bathrooms, marble floors, plenty of towels, and views of the beautiful gardens. The Alphen is a lovely hideaway and we always leave feeling relaxed while at the same time soaking up some history. Our favorite part of the Alphen is the huge patio outside the bar, where you can sit under an umbrella for breakfast or a sundowner and soak up the sounds and colors of Africa.

Room Tip: try to get a room in the large newer building. That is where the bigger rooms are located.

booked an Amazing suite at the Alphen from 22 march 2015 for a week and was treated to a memorable stay .
The standard of accomodation was superb with all the touches of luxury, 2 separate toilets a great size bath and wonderful ambiance in the huge bedroom .
The breakfast served in the La belle restaurant and included in the price was imaginative and tasty and the decor and surrounds could not be faulted.
My wife celebrated her birthday at the 5 Rooms restaurant and I couldn't imagine a better venue .
We will definitely pay a return visit
Jonathan

The room was lovely. The staff were professional. The hotel felt more like a business hotel. 5 Rooms Restaurant experience was poor. Difficulty getting a table at breakfast as Alphen is popular business meeting place. You can hear the nearby Motorway when sitting outside. Felt more like work than pleasure. Probably very good for business.

We have just returned from a 5 night stay here and there were some good things and some not so good. Our room was a Stunning Suite and was fine, although it must have been designed by a man because although they provided a good hairdryer, there was nowhere that I could plug it in that had a mirror that I could use. I did tell reception and they gave me a small make up mirror to use, but come on at these prices you should have a dressing table with mirror and plug, not a desk with a painting above it.
We had a very nice patio area outside our room that had two cigarette ends on the floor when we arrived and they where still there when we left. Also it was very noisy with traffic noise and you could smell cooking from the kitchens a lot of the time.
I noticed that a previous reviewer mentioned that the restaurants looked out over car parks, but it did not bother them. Well it bothered us, there seem to be lots of offices etc. there and I don't want to look at a car park whilst eating. The hotel also says it has 11.5 acres of gardens, well we could not find them! It seems to have about 2 acres. The bar by the pool area which I think is called The Rose Garden never had any staff there when we looked and seemed to only serve burgers and that type of food.
Talking of food, Five Rooms is not a fine dining restaurant, but that maybe our standards. When we were given the menu we thought they had made a mistake and given us the café menu. It was ok but not fine dining. The other restaurant did very nice breakfasts and the evening meals were ok. If you like American style food, where they pile it high and quantity takes precedence over quality you will like it. Would we go again, no.
I do have to say that the staff where lovely and we spoke to a manager in one of the restaurants who told us that he had been brought in to address various problems. So I hope it does improve, but you can not change its situation etc and there are much better places to stay in this price range.

Room Tip: We had room 15

We had to evacuate our home in Stonehurst and arrived at Alphen in the middle of the night with kids and grand parents....general manager Hannalie was very considerate and gave us a very special price due to the exceptional situation! Thanks very much that was hugely appreciated. Veronique

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review.

It was a testing time for many of our ‘neighbours’ and I can only hope that next time we meet it will be under different circumstances.

We wish you, your family and the dogs only the very best!

The Alphen, a boutique hotel located in the Constatia area of Cape Town, is a hotel of very special interior design. Either you like it or you don't. We did like it ... Check their webpage.
Our room (a stunning suite) was spacious, nicely furbished, clean and had 2 marble bathrooms (one with toilet and bathtub, the other one with shower and toilet). Very handy and nice. Complimentary Nespresso machine and minibar.

Breakfast in La Belle was abundant. As a hotel guest you could order anything from the menu card. Fresh fruit, omelette or scrambled eggs any style, yoghurts etc. La Belle seems to popular for outside guests, too. Many business men and ladies met for breakfast or coffee and had meetings. Friends, housewives etc. met up there, too. Relaxing atmosphere.

We had dinner at the 5rooms restaurants a couple of times. On the first night with outside guests (locals living in Cape Town who had not been there for quite some time). Our tuna and filet de sole were not to our liking; the chef de service acknowledged that the fish was not as it should have been and offered alternative. The situation was very professionally handled. The other 3 times we had dinner at the 5rooms we enjoyed the food very much. Nothing to complain about at all!

We were lucky to be served by Richard most of the time, a very friendly waiter who has excellent knowledge of the South African wines. We enjoyed our banter with him and the other waiters at our apero time on the little outside terrace and subsequent dinner in one of the again specially decorated dinner rooms.

The Alphen has a garden and swimming pool. In our opinion this part of the hotel has seen better days and needs some work.

As almost everywhere around Cape Town you need a car. When you drive there do not be surprised that both restaurants, the LaBelle and the 5rooms look out to the parking lot. It does not disturb even if you might think so when arriving.

As all hotels in Cape Town the prices are very high in comparison to guest houses etc.
