“Great spot in Cape Town and if you prefer countryside environment.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013 via mobile

This place is just great. Its not in the city Center or waterfront, but its just 20 minutes drive from there. Its in Constancian (the other side of Table Moutain) which has a beautiful landscape and surroundings.
The hotel itself is just great and you have everything in there... 3 restaurants, garden, pool, etc. Staff is outstanding as well the room decoration and space. Highly recommendable.

I made a multiple booking for two nights as we had a wedding at Buitenverwachting. The hotel decor is very different and we liked it. In particular the suite for my daughter and her groom. Service was unobtrusive but attentive. We only eat at the bistro area (breakfast and lunch) and I can recommend both the food and the service. We also used the bar area at Five Rooms and it is a really funky and by all accounts very popular venue. The five rooms are exceptionally well decorated and all have a different theme. A definite for a function or just a dinner. Alphen has gone through some seismic changes in the last few years and lots of new people in place during my experience from booking onwards. new GM and front desk manager top drawer.

Room Tip: There is an old block and a new block (it is a historical site). Decor as appropriate. Both are good...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

We arrived at the hotel by car on a busy Sunday afternoon, to a full car park, complicated as the majority of parking places were marked as reserved for the adjoining offices. Deciding this would not apply on a Sunday, we took a gap.

We were shown to our room which was beautifully furnished but complicated.

We decided to make a coffee, but the machine was too upscale that you needed to read a manual. First attempt resulted in an overflowing cup so we reverted back to the kettle. I get basic Nespresso style machines, put in a cartridge and push the button, but this thing had a steamer, multi-setting fill and would darn your socks while you waited. Complicated.

We put some music on the TV - complicated. Three different remote controls. I didn't want to source a HDMI input and scan for updated channels, i just wanted music.

The safe. So complicated there was a card that told you to: push the red button, push and hold button A, wait for 2 beeps then push button B, enter a code, then take a lie down in a dark room. As the safe wasn't fixed to anything, I decided not to bother as a would be thief would simply walk out with the full safe, hidden in my suitcase and pick it open later. Complicated.

The air conditioning - you guessed - complicated.

The bed was comfortable, lots of space, an eclectic mix of modern and old furniture, great spacious bathroom with luxury toiletries, hair dryer etc

We took advantage of the pool, access through the busy Rose Garden bar full of people eating and drinking wasn't the best in a swim suit, but the journey was worth it. Really comfortable uncomplicated sun loungers and beds, with loads of fresh towels and great service.

We ate in the restaurant in the evening and contrary to other reviews, found the food delicious and excellent value for money. Breakfast next day was even better, best breakfast juices in the world and freshly cooked food with first class service. Indeed service was impeccable throughout our stay.

The accommodation was not cheap but we enjoyed the experience.

We had a wonderful stay at the Alphen Hotel in Constantia, Cape Town. The hotel has been heavily invested in since we stayed there 2years ago and it seems to only have benefited from it. New facilities and services have been added without the loss of its heritage and character.

Hidden away in the green suburb that is Constantia the Alphen is set on a lush hillside with traquill gardens. The building themselves still retain all the character of the Dutch vineyard and estate that it once was. A luxurious feel runs throughout the hotel and the rooms have been very nicely finished.

The food was fantastic and the breakfast at the deli 'La Belle' is to be highly recommended with decent portion size and options to suit everyone. It is a popular place for business people throughout the day and evening carrying a lively atmosphere. The rose bar overlooks the gardens and provides an extensive cocktail list whilst the 5 room fine dining restaurant provides a more refined dining option with local wine recommendations and good food with fresh ingredients.

Service thorughout our stay was super. Staff we kind and friendly and willing to go out of there way to help us.

No doubt the hotel will benefit from the opening of its spa this year. Though no gym on site the fully equipped virgin active is just over the road and the hotel provides day passes. It is also worth noting that the nearby Cellars-Hoenhort hotel also has a hairdressers, spa and michelin star restaurant so additional facilities in equally fine settings are readily available.

We are glad this gem of a hotel has been invested in an hope it will continue to thrive. I have no doubt we will be back to visit again soon.

Room Tip: Rooms 2 and 3 back on to the garden complete with outdoor seating area. Privacy in the beautiful gar...

Thank-you for your wonderful review, we truly appreciate it. We do pride ourselves in the magnificent gardens that the hotel and restaurants are surrounded by. Did you manage to have a stroll along the Alphen Trail adjacent to the property?
For the benefit of our potential future guests we are within very close proximity to the Constantia Village Shopping Centre where there are a selection of hairdressers and Beauty Salons available as well. Once we have our own Spa up and running we will be sure to offer a great pamper experience.
Hopefully the next time you come through to visit, you will give us your opinion on the new Sushi Menu that was recently launched at The Rose Bar. Wishing you all the best and please check our website for specials that we launch throughout the year, we'd like to welcome you back!

We really enjoyed the venue. We had looked at various placed and were unwilling to spend good money on poor accommodation. The hotel accommodated us at a great price. All the amenities were great. Bar, pool, rooms and both restaurants. Unfortunately the spa was not ready during our stay. We stayed in room 8 and it was luxury. We looked at other rooms too and they were all good.
The staff were friendly and accommodative, though on the down side, the staff were a bit disorganised. Our final bill was incorrect and our “inclusive breakfast” was charged. No one could explain how the inclusive breakfast worked in the restaurant so they ended up billing us for one of the “inclusive breakfast”. I would go back though…

Room Tip: Any room should do...

We read about the Alphen hotel just after we arrived back home last year. It was high on our list of places to visit this year and we were not disappointed, on the contrary. First of all, it is a beautiful estate, no discussion about that. When we first visited on Sunday evening we were very friendly welcomed by all staff members and got a quick tour of the place by the manager on duty (sorry to forget his name). Food at the 5 Rooms was excellent and the place is really very elegantly decorated. Excellent service by Moses. Today, Wednesday, we returned for lunch at La Belle. Fantastic seating outside, very good food and excellent service by Mavis. Why don't we have this kind of place back home in Belgium?

One of the best hotels I ever stayed in!! Terrific on every level. Very opulent. Pure luxury! It's a place you wish someone would tell you to go to.. They set standards other 5* establishments struggle to meet. The cafe on premises is very trendy with wonderful breakfasts. The 5Rooms Restaurant served us the best food we ever had!!! Literally! We now know the real meaning to the saying 'a feast in the mouth'. Thought we knew, but they proved us wrong. Unforgettable presentation, flavours and combinations. Thank you Alphen!!
