“Best ever dining Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014 via mobile

They were fully booked when I called, but when the excellent manager Joshua heard that it was our second wedding anniversary, he promised to try his best to get us a good table, and thats exactly what he did. From the great and friendly service at the martini bar where we had pre dinner drinks to the excellent service from Joshua and his staff. We felt spoilt... The food was truly exquisite.... We went for the 4 course meal. The game fish sashimi was wonderful. The trout followed by the Karoo lamb main was fantastic. The dessert was perfection..... My wife and I agreed that this was by far our best dining experience, and our new favorite restaurant. Wonderful food, was complimented by excellent service ... Thanx to Joshua and his team....

“A "serious" restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

The Rose Bar at the Alphen Hotel has closed for winter, so we elected to have a pre dinner drink at The Fern Bar at Hohenhort Cellars. Sadly the bar was very quiet and had no atmosphere at all - it felt like a waiting room for the main event, being dinner at The Greenhouse. I wouldnt recommend the Fern Bar at all.

The Greenhouse is a serious restaurant - there are photos of Peter Templehoff with illuminaries such as Heston Blumenthal, Michele Roux and Raymond Blanc.

The service was friendly and slick. The sommelier was knowledgeable and I thought the pairings were good, especially the chilled rose' port to accompany the aerated fois gras.

For me a truly satisfying dining experience is not only about the food and wine, but the ambience also plays a role. So whilst we really enjoyed the food and wine, I felt the atmosphere was quite stiff and stilted. You didn't get the feeling that people were having a "good" time, but perhaps its just not that type of restaurant.

We visited The Greenhouse for dinner as a party of 5 in early February. We've tried out just about all of Cape Town's fine dining establishment (and there are quite a few of them), and The Greenhouse ranks right at the top alongside nearby La Colombe.

The restaurant is situated in the historic main Cellare Hohenort building. Very well decorated and appointed. The table are spacious and spaced well apart. We sat in the far left corner.

Service was of a consistently high standard. Very knowedgable about all ingredients and wines. We ordered cocktails when we arrived. We were cautioned that these could take a while as they'd be prepared at the moan hotel bar in a separate building. However, the manager encouraged the barman to get them straight away, and we ended up having them in front of us far more quickly than the week before when we visited The the Conservatory.

We opted for tasting menus - seafood and the more adventurous option. Both were simply outstanding. Course after course was expertly constructed and absolutely delicious. Some were really imaginative, including the beetroot and goats cheese cupcakes. We enjoyed each mouthful, both cooked and raw (e.g. Carpaccio and oysters). Portion sizes were very well judged, so we were able to enjoy all equally.

The Greenhouse has been added to our list of regulars.

“Fantastic experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014 via mobile

We came here for a birthday dinner and had the Dom Perignon menu (including the bottle). The atmosphere and location is great, classical, refined. The service is very knowledgable and friendly and the food was absolutely delicious, I would say that it was one of my best dinners in South Africa in the last 10 years - and I've been to most of the top restaurants. I had been to their other restaurant, the Conservatory a few weeks before and was not so impressed, but this was in a different league.

“Incrdibly delicious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

Truly a must to be visited while you're in Cape Town surroundings.

Colonial style interior, nice and warm.

Pretty fixed menus, we had a couple of each serving to choose from: two straters, two mains and two desserts.

Amazing taste combinations, finely tuned. Size of the portions is just right.

Don't forget to dress up a little. Being there in a polo shirt, felt a little uncomfy.

Kind of really expensive compared to Cape Town restaurants.
