I had cause to visit this restaurant for a relative's birthday lunch. The setting is awesome, the notorious South Easter wind is bearable (even outside), but the food is shockingly awful. I had an avocado and prawn salad and all I can say is that both of the main ingredients should have been given a decent burial rather than appearing on my plate. I basically couldn't eat either as I kept getting visions of myself doubled up over a toilet pan emptying the contents of my stomach down it after having been attacked by whatever infection lurked within the food. The flesh on both was on the cusp of being decomposed. And when you're on a very expensive holiday the last thing you need is to be holed up in a hotel room debating when you should call in your travel insurance to get you out of the country. Talk about 'dish of the day', I should probably rather talk about 'puke-of-the-day'. Choose your infection - salmonella? E.coli? Botulism? Luckily I managed to escape any of those but at the expense of being very hungry for the rest of the day.
I think the problem with this establishment - and many others on the tourist routes in South Africa - is that they have become very complacent in the way they treat their customers. I have made quite a few visits over recent years and noticed a steady decline, particularly since the World Cup in 2010.
I saw a Japanese tour bus in the car park that I had previously seen at the penguins at Boulders Beach up the road, but I'm not sure they'll be so many coming in future once the word gets out about the low quality provided in SA restaurants if my - and others in the party's - experience is anything to go by. In fact, according to a newspaper report I read while in SA, its already happening - overseas visitor numbers are going down.
Anyway, I hope my effort here might serve as a wake up call to this and other Cape tourist restaurants to improve their quality quickly, and also a warning to any overseas visitors that they should watch out for potential food poisoning in the interim.
