“OK for some”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Not my cup of tea. I would, however, advise a visit if you have not been before. I suggest going with a crowd of friends as this will make the experience more memorable.

“Crowded, but fun”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

I bought a Groupon for a Township Tour and lunch at Mzoli's and went with my mom, dad, two friends and my fiance. We toured Langa and our guide was very informative and friendly. We were also taken to Mzoli's where we jumped ahead of the VERY long queue (due to our tour booking). It was very crowded but again, due to our booking they had reserved a table for us, so we were seated quickly enough.

I would definately recommend going in a group as you have to go next door to buy your booze, or you can just bring your own in a coolerbox. Bring your own knives, forks, plates, and serviettes/wetwipes and be cautious if you're a vegetarian, while they cater for you, you'll be around a lot of others who are eating meat.

The food was braai'd very nicely, and the music was pumping some great beats, local as well as international music. Go on a sunny Sunday and park off in the sun with your friends.

I liked that there were security cameras around and that Mzoli himself walked around clearing the paper plates and bottles and making sure everyone one was ok. You do want to be careful though, as getting to Mzolis can prove challenging so its best to carpool and of course, keep an eye on your valuables and dont come dressed out to impress.

“Fun but Super Touristy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

I saw TKZee at Mzoli's and it was EPIC! Unfortunately, every local with a sob story has caught onto the tourism factor as Mzoli's. So it's still a must do but it's lost it's township authenticity for local Capetonians a little bit.

“"Order 4 if you only need 3"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

That's what my photography guide, Peter, told me.
because the food is so good, you gotta have at least one more.
He was right. We ordered the lamb chops and sausages and they were amazing.

its a pity that Cape Town is 15 hours away but flight. Just writing this review and thinking about it is making me crave for it.

“Mzoli's is a Cape Town must-visit restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Mzoli's is difficult to explain. Simply experience it.

It's a self-service butchery with about nine braai fires, a semi-open-air place to sit and eat, with a shebeen for beer across the road, and house DJs, sometimes live kwaito on the street.

Mzuli's is in the heart of Gugulethu, a black township about 15 kilometres out of Cape Town. Bring nothing or anything you want to eat or drink, meet loads of nice people, locals and travellers, no rules except respect everyone and have fun.

Mzoli's is truly a six-senses place: sight, sound, taste, smell, feel and experience. On a Sunday hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people pass through the doors of the butchery, so it's basically the freshest meat you'll taste in Africa: different cuts of beef, lamb, pork, chicken and awesome boerewors/sausage.

To be clear, Mzoli's serves meat and only meat. For some variety you'll also find some meat and occasionally there is also meat.

There are no added extras besides the secret sauce (delicious, be sure to add it) and pap (maize porridge or mealy meal, the staple food of much of Africa) and chakalaka (tomato, onion and chilli).

Going to Mzoli's is safe and easy. Take the N2 out of Cape Town, then the Duinefontein exit, cross the freeway again on Duinefontein Road until you come to Klipfontein Road, the main arterial road where you turn left, or away from Cape Town. Cross the first major intersection then turn left where you next hear the music and feel the party. Park anywhere nearby to Mzoli's. Tip the guy who looks after your car and mingle.

If you're going to take your own things I would suggest perhaps: steak knives (only plastic knives and forks are available), red wine and wine glasses, salads. But you know, at Mzoli's if you're happy with meat and beer you'll have a great time. Perhaps don't complicate it.

Just go. Once you're there you'll understand.
