“For real Japanese food - go somewhere else”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

This is a pleasant restaurant with a nice location, nice vibe and a nice sea view - particularly from the patio upstairs, but the problem with this testaurant is that it pretends to be a real sushi restaurant...
Sushi is based on a Japanese food concept, but at this restaurant (Wakame), the only thing that resembles Wakame (a delicios seaweed in Japanese) is the ugly black weed on the shore rocks - seen from the patio when looking towards the see.
This is NOT a Japanese restaurant, this is just a pricy restaurant with a Japanese name, that serves some dishes that resemble simple Japanese dishes.
The cost of a simple "combo" dish, with a few "salmon roses" and a few teriyaki "rainbow" costs more than a similar "spread" at a very good Japanese restaurant in Tokyo,
In fact, it actually costs more than a full meal at some of the top RSA gourmet restaurants such Jordan or Terroir.
Also, Pease note that the $10-15 meal per person cost that as indicated by TripAdvisor is wrong...(unless the $10-15 refers to a single entree dish, or a single portion of whatever, or two bottles of tasteless water), Similarly, the wine & bubbly selection is poor and overpriced for its type.
To sum it up: Nice location, OK food, but not Japanese,

“A great dining experience.”

Great ambience and spectacular views. Food was clean, fresh and delicious. The waitering staff work together as a team which results in good, friendly service. Overall highly recommended

The view from the second floor is simply stunning. Food was yummy, we ended off visiting two days in a row. Service was good.

“Jap disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

I decided to take the family for a special supper while we were in Cape Town - all 7 of us.
We had booked a week in advance asking for a "nice" table.
We arrived at 8:30 table was not nice - right in the middle of the hubbub. And what a racket was going on! It reminded me of being in a sociable weavers nest at breeding time! One had to shout to get heard by each other.
We ordered simple starters, sushi and fried calamari followed by duck with plum sauce. The others had some thing else.
After two bottles of wine 3 litres of water the starters arrived. I enjoyed mine.
Then a wait of almost 2 hours for the mains!! By this time the place was emptying and even more wine had to be ordered to keep the troops happy.
All in all not a happy time and a real disappointment I'm sorry to report.

“Expensive but not very good sushi”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We were pretty sure going into this place it was going to be overpriced tourist sushi, but a friend had recommended it. It did end up being pricey, and it did end up being pretty mediocre tourist food. They were out of the dumplings we wanted, and the others we got were not very good. The sushi itself was not good - just salmon and tuna, and california rolls with the worst imitation crab meat I've encountered - extra dry and spongy. Both the salmon and tuna were not of very high quality - not fatty and moist and flavorful.
