We’ve just stayed for a week at 23 Loader Street which is one of the growing portfolio of De Waterkant Cottages. We’ve wanted to stay in De Waterkant for some time, although appreciate that the testosterone-loaded atmosphere of the gay village may be too much for some. In fact, weekend evenings apart, it’s pretty laid back, and one of the big advantages of the village is the new piazza, which is packed with superb restaurants like Tank, Adiamo and The Nose. Slightly further afield, there’s Bruce Robertson’s The Showroom, which is pretentious but probably produces the best food in Cape Town. Jardine’s is pretty good, too, but service is slowish, the air-con couldn’t cope with the temperature, and it was all too frenetic for its own good.
23 Loader Street itself is a townhouse for two with ultra swanky décor. There’s a decent sized roof terrace complete with Jacuzzi, a fabulous glass-roofed shower in the wonderfully bright bathroom, a cool, white bedroom and a superb open-plan living space on the ground floor with umpteen halogen lights on dimmers, a remote control surround sound system that seemed to go into every room, a well-equipped kitchen area complete with washer/dryer, and an intriguing downstairs toilet all in stainless steel which is like having a bit of your own backroom fantasy in your own home. Well, we are in the gay village… It’s true to say that 23 Loader Street may be too much for some (actually we never did get the hand of all the remotes) but we loved it. You may also want start employing the services of an interior decorator once you return home.
But we did wonder why air-con was limited to the bedroom. Houses constructed with glass get hot and 23 Loader Street was no exception. Cape Town in mid January gets very hot. The sun loungers also got a bit uncomfortable without any cushions, but then we’ve got rather bony bums.
Service wise, 23 Loader Street was kept spotlessly clean throughout our stay, and staff seemed happy to oblige with just about anything. They’ll even arrange an in-room massage if that takes your fancy. Wi-Fi was available in the house at a reasonable R180 for up to 1gb download. There’s also a gated area for your hire car around the back of the property.
So, in short, a really stylish place with good service and with easy access to everything you might want in Cape Town.
