“Perfect Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2008

A friend originally from Cape Town suggested this hotel and I am so pleased we took her advice. We upgraded to this hotel from the one used by Virgin on their 3 centre package which was further out of the city.

The Southern Sun has a shuttle service every half an hour to the Waterfront but you can walk there and back during the daytime in about 15 minutes. Our room was on the top floor with a view towards the Waterfront and we could see the unfinished road at the front mentioned on a previous review but my friend has told me that it’s been like that for about 30 years!

The room itself was very comfortable with a very large bathroom with both a bath and shower.

As you would expect from a hotel of this type the facilities were excellent with a nice bar area and a large restaurant for breakfast (which was very good with a lot of choice). There is a swimming pool but it was too cold to use when we were there so can’t comment on this. We ate in the main restaurant in the hotel on one night and were very impressed by the food and service. The staff generally in the hotel couldn’t do enough for you – on the ground floor there is even someone to press the lift button for you!

We also used the concierge service to book a trip for us and they also helped us out with other questions we had.

As mentioned by others, there is a pizza restaurant a couple of minutes walk from the hotel which was very busy but worth the wait once we got a table.

All in all, I would definitely recommend the Southern Sun Waterfront as a base in Cape Town.

Hotel is in a pretty good location. Half way between the Waterfront (awesome mall, for the tame and sane, cheap shuttle bus every half hour) and the downtown area (ok for the streetwise, but stick to shop opening hours!!). The rooms are very clean, my girlfriend described the shower as a gift from God. You just simply wouldn't find a hotel with this amount of staff in the UK, and they all know their job. The restaurant is excellent, with a great buffet aswell as an a la carte menu for very good prices. If you're feeling lazy, there is a superb wine store nextdoor, and a fantastic pizza restaurant/takeaway - perfect for a quiet night in!

It's my first trip to SA, hence I have no yardstick to compare to, but I'd definitely stay here again.

Confronted with the choice of a hotel in this area of Cape Town, one may find that the prices can very significantly from one property to the next (door).

The Southern Sun Waterfront is by far the best value. Be certain to book the correct location as there are several Southern Sun properties in Cape Town and some are not as desirable, by a long stretch.

It is an elegant hotel with modern design and furnishings. Service is very good, by international standards. Higher floors have very nice views (Table Mountain and/or Ocean), and the breakfast buffet (hot and cold) is well worth it. The in-hotel restaurant is outstanding for local cuisine and carries a good wine list (South African). The hotel also has a "lobby" bar with indoor/outdoor seating (including an outdoor pool-sun chair area).

Welcomed marks of high standard include in-room dried-fruit basket, turn-down service, and free paper, as well as free coffee, tea, juice, fruit and sweets which are served by staff in the lobby.

The property location is also quite good: across the street from the Convention Centre, and a few steps away from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront shops and restaurant complex (a must for dinner). It is also at the foot of Long Street (take a taxi to the higher reaches of the street for restaurants and night-life) and not far from downtown (historic buildings, Parliament, Botanical Garden, etc).

Personal security is good, but the usual precautions should be exercised when walking to and from the hotel, and only official taxis should be used.

Overall, if you need to be in the downtown/convention centre/Victoria waterfront area, this hotel is perfect - a bargain for what you get.

  • Liked — The upscale feel and service for the low cost.
  • Disliked — in-room WIFI is not free

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2007

The first room we were assigned had 2 double beds, near the lifts, and with no room to move around. We contacted reception and were immediately given another room, with a king bed, and away from the lift, though overlooking the road (though this wasn’t too noisy). We did though have to move the suitcase rack from one room to the other, but that wasn’t too much hassle.

We were very impressed with the welcome and overall friendliness of the staff at this hotel. The breakfasts were very good, with a good choice of differing selections to meet all tastes. We also found the shuttle bus between the hotel and Waterfront was extremely useful as this allowed my husband to relax of an evening, without worrying about driving back in the dark. We would stay at this hotel again if it wasn’t for the incomplete overpass that when completed would be only 60 feet away from the hotel, and therefore this would account for a lot of traffic noise, unless the windows are triple glazed to alleviate the noise.

There is a pool, but as we were so busy sightseeing we didn’t have the time to use it. On the first night I ate in the hotel, but my husband wasn’t feeling too well, and so didn’t want a meal, but they allowed him to join me. I ordered a burger, and unfortunately it came still partially in its wrapping, but it was dealt with promptly and I received an apology. The concierge was also very helpful with maps and directions to the key tourist areas, as well as timetables for the Hop on sightseeing buses.

After our trips out (we stayed there for 4 nights) we were greeted in reception with sweets and fruit juice – very refreshing after a day sightseeing. Parking is available at the hotel, at around ZAR15 per night, and we made use of this as we only used the car once in Cape Town – to drive to Cape Point.

  • Liked — Warm and friendly staff
  • Disliked — Location and traffic noise

This is a good hotel with a clean, nicely lit lobby. We were greeted with fresh juice upon arrival. The staff were friendly and professional. The rooms are good for western standard. Keep in mind that this hotel used to be owned by the holiday inn.

Location-wise, it is about a nice 10 min walk to the river front. about a 10 min cab ride to downtown for dinner/night life. It is centrally located so its not too far from the wineraries in the north or from the national parks down south.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights then moved down to campus bay and stayed there for 3 nights.

This is a good choice (not as expensive as the hotels at the waterfront) for first time visitors to cape town that are looking for convenience and a nice clean room to stay at a reasonable cost.

We stayed at this hotel in September 2007. On arrival we were greeted and our bags were immediately collected. We were shown to the check-in counter and all went quickly. Staff were very friendly and hhelpful. We were then shown to our room. The room is small but there is a bathroom with a bath and a shower and the rooms are modern, clean and new. The carpets looked clean and the walls were clean. I then searched for the mini-bar and discovered this is only available in the executive rooms or suites. We had a lovely view of the habour area and the location is unbeatable. You are a short walk to the V & A Waterfont although you do have to cross a busy road but the hotel offers guests a shuttle bus every few minutes which is great. The room servce is fast and friendly and the food is good although there should be a wider selection for vegeterians. The buffet breakfasts are also very nice. Overall the hotel is very lovely the area is a great location near the CBD where there are shops, clubs bars and a short drive to camps bay beach. We would stay here again but would have to consider an executive room but overall very nice hotel.

We stayed at the Southern Sun in July, on a 3 centre Virgin holiday from the UK.

We upgraded from what was given in the brochure and very pleased that we did. The location was fab, near to the V&A waterfront, and all city attractions. Hotel provides a shuttle bus to the waterfront that leaves every half an hour, up till 11pm, we used this all the time for going out in the evening for a meal.

The rooms there are lovely, all facilities you need, sep bath and shower, comfy beds with nice duvets.

Breakfast eat all you want buffet had a great range of food, similar to what you would get on an all inclusive 5* hotel.

The hotel was used by a lot of business guests, but this is good, as it makes the staff extremely efficient and courteous. Reception were very helpful, any probs they will sort immediately, the concierge deserves a mention, they will book your tours, advice on weather, taxis, any info you want really. And its open 24 hours.

If going out in evening, V&A had a wide range of different restaurants and a shopping mall to have a mooch around, also cinema (very cheap by UK standards!), lots of coffee shops. A supermarket for those late night snacks and toiletries you might need. Evening meals in restaurants was of a very high standard, 3 course meal with bottle of good S African wine, drinks and tip was average £25. Recommend The Greek Fisherman and Societe which is voted best by the locals for something a little extra special and romantic.

Whilst in Cape Town, we did Table Mountain, White Shark cage diving at Gansbaai (recommend White Shark Ecoventures - look at their website, booked from UK), full day tour to Cape Point, Stellanbosch. Recommend the aquarium for a couple of hours to chill out looking at fish!

One thing I'd like to say about the safety situation, well, we didn't see anything to comprimise your safety, okay, we were sensible and stayed to well populated areas, don't go out on your own at night etc, but I was a bit worried about this before going and not once whilst I was there did I feel threatened or concerned about anything.
