“Best Guest House we have ever stayed in!”

Rutland Lodge

Jul 25, 2008

My partner and I stayed 3 nights at this beautiful guest house in Feburary 2008 and it was impossible to fault! Apologies for the delay in writing this review.

Cape Town was the final leg of our trip in South Africa and we wanted to end it staying somewhere comfortable before heading home. This place did not disappoint. When we arrived, our car literally broke down outside the house with the hood steaming. Immediately, Benoit was at the road side greeting us and then immediately contacted the hire car company. That afternoon, our car had been replaced! In summary:

House: Furnished beautifully, tastefully and extremely clean
Breakfast: It was whatever you wanted, cooked to order!
Location: Fantastic
Room: We booked the suite at the top of house. Spoil yourself, it is well worth it.
Service: Exceptional. Nothing was ever too much trouble.

I have travelled extensively and I can honestly say this Guest House was the best I have ever stayed in. Don’t even think about looking elsewhere, stay at Rutland Lodge, you will not regret it!

There is little I could write that has not already been written about Rutland Lodge. I would just like to add my voice to those who have written about how wonderful the lodge and Jean Jo are. In addition, I must mention Jean Jo's dogs, Hugo and Sam, both of whom enhanced the enjoyment of our stay.

I had a fabulous time at Rutland Lodge. So great, that no place else I stayed in South Africa compared.

Pros
1. Jean Jo is a great host. He makes you feel like a guest in his home and is perfect with suggestings things to do and see as especially where to eat!
2. Gorgeous scenery and perfect location to many neighborhoods and attractions.
3. Clean rooms with every amenity you could need and pleasant competent house staff.
4. Breakfast is EXCELLENT. I typically ate South African style pancakes but was pleased with everything I ate in the home (and drank) as well as the presentation.
5. Warm fireplace to cozy up to after a long day touring especially since I hit Cape Town at the start of winter.

Cons
1. I had to leave Cape Town without going up Table Mountain or visiting Robben Island. No fault of the Rutland Lodge however.

I highly recommend this guest lodge. Herbert Baker was also the architect for Cecil John Rhodes, world famous colonialist and imperialist. Need I say more....

    • Disliked — It was too cold when I arrived to swim in the lovely pool in the backyard.

“Dan & Karen's Honeymoon”

Rutland Lodge

Apr 9, 2008

Our host, Benoit, was incredibly hospitable, very helpful and informative with local knowledge and suggestions of where to go and what to see.

Our stay at Rutland Lodge was simply wonderful with a cool pool surrounded by palm trees, modern interiors and excellent views of Cape Town itself. These modern comforts compliment the charm and character of this "must experience" guest house.

We had a magical time whilst staying at Rutland Lodge and we thoroughly recommend a stay there.

We have just returned from a week end in Cape Town and our stay at Rutland Lodge was fabulous. We received a very warm welcome from Jean Jo and Benoit. The lodge is in a charming suburb, and view from the rooms is fantastic. The entire lodge is tastefully decorated. Breakfasts are excellent. Everything was perfect and we are highly recommending the lodge to everybody.
