“Fab Hotel But Watch Out For the Construction Work”

Myself and wife are just back after 5 great nights in Cape Town. After reading the great reviews on this hotel on Trip Advisor we thought we would give it a go. On arrival there appeared quite a lot of noisy construction work going on accross the street due to expansion of the hotel. We were not unduley concerned, but soon were as we were given a room facing directly on to a full blown demolition project. We had just come in from a 12 hour flight an were initally very grateful they allowed us to check in at 11am hoping for a couple hours sleep but there was no hope given the unbelieveable noise. I complained immediately and to be fair, by the end of the day we had a much better room on the top floor on another side of the building. The construction work I believe is going on until June/July 2009 and nothing was mentioned to us while booking (which we were not so happy about) so please make sure you are allocated a room away from the noise. Once moved, the work did not affect us at all.

Bad stuff over, I have to say once we moved room everything was great and much in line with other comments. Staff superb, friendly and helpful. Room was modern, funky and great and was cleaned to an exceptionally high standard every day. Breakfast was great with a huge selection and we ate dinner once which was not quite as good as we hoped, but not bad. Overall would heartily recommend this hotel, just check on the construction and where your room is going to be....

“Quirky, fun hotel”

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice

This is a fun hotel, a short walk from Long St in central Cape Town.

I was extremely impressed with the front desk staff - they were all young, positive and all really tried to help and be as friendly as possible.

The dark hallways won't be to everyone's taste with extreme, garish colours. The rooms weren't huge, but were very comfortable with free wi-fi.

Breakfast was excellent with a good range of eating options.

The only negative I found was with the bar staff. They didn't share the same positive customer focused approach as the front desk staff. Despite this the bar is worth a look, if only to check out the 6 themed toilets (!!!)..

Overall a fun, different hotel!

I stayed here to two nights on a business trip. The hotel is comfortable, the food good, but it has a certain style. There are three themes lifts (I personally liked the shark cage), there is a climbing wall, and all the TVs in the bar are were showing extreme sports.

The room had modern décor and the shower a glass window so you could look into the room and out to Table Mountain (or even the other way).

I would describe some of the colours as gross and they could be seen as extremely tacky! But they work here and give the place a feel like no other. You will love it or hate it!

One of the most strangely decorated hotels I have ever stayed at. It was definitely a bit of a shock on arrival at midnight after a long flight from the UK. However everything works well and its fun discovering all the new quirks. The smoking, or as they call it coughing, room is hilarious.
The best thing about the hotel is the staff, friendly, helpful and professional. Food is good, the bar is excellent and the location is almost perfect.
Would definitely return here.

“Great value and excellent style”

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice

Jan 28, 2008

We stayed in this fabulous hotel for 2 nights in June 2007 and couldn't fault it. The attention to detail was excellent with touches like a glass of fruit juice as you check in, and a pin-code safe in the bedroom. The room was amazing with a really comfortable king-size bed and a view of Table Mountain that was difficult to tear myself away from. I loved the shower which had a floor-to-ceiling window into the bedroom!

Breakfast in the restaurant was excellent, as was the room service and especially the cocktails!

Didn't get to try out the climbing wall on the days we were there, but it looked very impressive.

The staff were very helpful in organising taxis and recommending places to visit etc.
