I have just returned from Cape Town having stayed at Mandela Rhodes Place for 11 days while on business.
Bar one major reservation, I would recommend this place heartily. The location is great, right in the centre of town within a short stroll of Long Street and the lovely Company's Gardens. It is not a hotel as such, more serviced apartments. They are very spacious, well furnished, bright, clean and welcoming. The kictchen area is very well fitted out, there was even a washing machine and tumble dryer which was fantastic as I was travelling with my 2 small children (age 3 and 5). There is air conditioning throughout. There is a restaurant in the lobby (independent of hotel) which is good and there are a number of great restaurants and cafes within 3 minutes walk. The pool is on a roof terrace. It is well kept and a good length for swimming, it also has a small separate children's area. It's not really a "lazing by the pool" sort of place though, there are a couple of sun beds but that's it.
...and now the reservation about the place. While we were staying there a major water pipe burst on the 4th floor completely flooding one side of that floor and spilling over the balcony into the lobby which was also flooded. This clearly was an unfortunate accident and not within the power of the establishment to prevent necessarily however it did happen and the response to the incident was extremely poor. My mother and 2 children were in the hotel at the time. It happened at about 2230h. My mother was disturbed by the noise of the vast quantity of water flowing and got out of the apartment and downstairs via the emergency exits with the 2 kids who were in pyjamas without shoes or jackets or any outer wear. The evacuation was not co-ordinated by anyone in the hotel. They were met by no-one in the lobby. Nobody seemed to take control of the situation. My mother and kids were left on the street in the dark in a state of undress for 30 minutes until I arrived back and took them to another hotel for the night. The police and fire dept would not let us back into the building until they had declared it safe. At no stage during the whole ordeal did anyone from the hotel inform us about what was going on nor offer to assist my mother and children, merely left them to their own devices on the street. While the incident may have been an unavoidable the response was truly appalling. The next day we went back to the hotel. The duty manager apologised and we were not charged for that night.
