“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

Our first trip to South Africa began with three nights at this delightful hotel in Cape Town. Staff were extremely helpful, suggesting and making restaurant bookings for our evening meal and advising on places to visit and helping with driving directions. When we experienced a 'hiccup' with our car rental they were on the phone immediately to sort things out for us - definitely went that extra mile for us! The lounge areas were exceptionally comfortable with a wealth of information to hand. Breakfasts were well cooked, varied and filling. Our room was well-equipped, clean and comfortable with its own outdoor seating area where we could enjoy a quiet drink (complimentary port in the room) after our day's adventures before setting out for the evening. All in all a delightful place to stay.

Our room was at the back of the hotel, which is really two separate houses that back on to each other, and the original front garden was our private garden with table & chairs and a lounger. The atmosphere for visitors is wonderful from start to finish - there are so may touches like the home made biscuits in the cookie jar provided and the complimentary port and sherry and afternoon tea and great breakfasts and ..........! Colleen recommended Cafe Paradiso on Kloof Street. We loved it and the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back look out on Table Mountain - ours was right in line with the cable car.

Welgelegen was an excellent choice for our recent trip to Cape Town. My wife and I stayed here for three nights recently and we have nothing but good things to say about the B&B. From check in to check out everyone was super friendly, accommodating and helpful. Some comments: the front of house staff made us feel welcome, breakfast buffet and cooked meals were top notch, room was clean and spacious with great views of Table Mtn, staff helped us book taxis to and from dinner and made sure we had directions when we left for the day, neighborhood was safe, easy walking distance from a bunch of excellent restaurants and bars. I would definitely stay here again if we ever make it back to Cape Town and would recommend this place to others.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 7. Had a nice view and was quiet.

Everything about Welgelegen was wonderful - the staff, the rooms, the common areas and the breakfasts. Our hosts, Colleen and Fiona couldn't do enough for us to make our stay comfortable and memorable. We can't recommend it highly enough.

Room Tip: WHile the large rooms are lovely, you'll do just fine in one of the smaller rooms.

Our first visit to SA in January 2013 and Welgelegen was just a perfect place to arrive at after the flight from the UK. Instant unwinding. Fiona and her staff were so friendly and helpful and full of good advice. Our room was very comfortable and quiet, the breakfasts were wonderful and sitting in the courtyard in the sunshine was a great introduction to SA hospitality.
It is a great spot in Cape Town, easy to get to all the attractions but just off the main hustle and bustle to be an oasis of calm. We would recommend the hotel to all our friends

My family and I stayed here for 4 nights in February and could not have been more pleased. The location is a great one with views of Table Mountain and also very peaceful and quiet. The breakfast in the morning was fabulous. The staff went out of their way to help us with planning our day. Booking our tickets up Table Mt. from the hotel to save us a queue when we got there - something we wouldn't have thought of. Home baked cookies in our room was a special touch. I loved the decor. Overall a great experience for all of us.

We have just returned from our first visit to South Africa touring around the Cape in January/February 2013.
On arrival at Welgelegen from the airport at around 10.00 am we were surprised to find our room ready, and even more surprised at the wonderful view of Table Mountain both through the French doors and from the balcony outside. The room was well and stylishly furnished and the bathroom a good size and also with a great view of Table Mountain.
We were initially welcomed by Colleen the manager who helped us to settle in, giving us a few pointers for what to do on our first day, and later we met Fiona the owner who proved to be terrific at recommending things to do, suggesting and booking restaurants and taxis for us. She made us feel so welcome and made sure that we had a wonderful stay. Nothing was too much trouble. She even helps you to pronounce the name of the hotel!
Breakfast was excellent - a buffet with breads, fruit, yogurts, cereals etc, plus a full English egg, bacon, tomato etc if you wished, served by the friendly and efficient staff in the beautiful dining room or in the courtyard if you prefer. This was a great place to snooze in the sun, or shade, later in the afternoon.
Parking outside was easy as it is a cul de sac and so there is no through traffic.
The area around is quiet and safe and we walked to and from restaurants in the Gardens area every night. There is plenty of choice of all types - budget to fine dining. If you were going further afield you may need to use a taxi but Fiona will arrange it and it will not be expensive.
If you prefer hotels with a bit of character, rather than the cloned chain examples clustered around the Waterfront, Welgelegen will be your style.
When we return to Cape Town we will be back.

Room Tip: If you want a view of Table Mountain you need a room at the back - all rooms are quiet as there is l...
