Do not leave this too late in the day, if you are hiking in the summer. it gets intensely hot up there. Take water, and a hat. It's uphill all the way, but you go round the peak and get incredible views - on one side of the City Bowl and Table Mountain, on the other, the sprawl of Camps Bay beneath the Hottentots-Holland mountains. Some bits take you into the shade, thank heavens, we found ourselves panting from the heat! We only walked up to the ladder - this took us an hour. Although we hike regularly, we are by no means at peak fitness - we were told the entire trip to the top would take an hour, so we were disappointed in only reaching the Ladder before time constraints meant we had to turn back. There is good parking for cars at the bottom of the hill, free. And a small booth selling a basic selection of water
