"Salt is like love. Once you can give it, you can't take it away." These are the words of our host, Faldela Tolker, who welcomed us in her home as part of the Andulela Cooking Safari in Bo-Kaap. We began the morning with a stop at Atlas Trading Company, where we learned about Cape Malay spices and purchased spices for a meal we would later prepare. We made a stop at the local coffee house and also a neighborhood grocery store. We then were welcomed in the home of Fadela. She taught us how to make roti, fold samosas and prepare chicken curry. One person in the group was a vegan; another didn't eat chicken -- Faldela accomodated these special needs by preparing additional dishes for these guests. We met her husband and children. We helped roll out the dough, stir the curry and stuff the samosas. It was a great day and I highly recommend this experience for anyone visiting Cape Town. It was a wonderful way of learning more about the history, culture and cuisine while spending the morning inside the home of a very special woman who I will never forget. Love -- that's her special ingredient. You'll feel it when you walk in the door!
