My first ascent was in 1953, but having since become a Capetonian (and lapsed into their ways) the cableway has almost become out of bounds, so bless the visitors who arrive and look for "local knowledge""
The website told us that the cableway was operating and allowed us to book our tickets. Even though we thought we'd made an early start, parking was 500m from the cable station and the queue to get into the car reflected this. The queue itself was a virtual United Nations (perhaps with more singularity of purpose), and well controlled. Loading procedures were smooth and practised, and we were soon off. A few turns of the revolving floor, the changing views and close examination of the mountain, and then we were there1
