Liked the history and the projects underway. Felt very uncomfortable as any intruder. Although interesting it felt intrusive

“ProTeam SA Langa tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2014

If you are going to take a tour of a local township, you should definitely book it through the ProTeam group. MC took us around the Langa township and being from the township himself, he provided a unique and inside look at what life is like in the hostels and shanties. Though touring Table Mountain, the beaches, vineyards, and Waterfront are Cape Town tourist staples, you would be remiss not to take an inside look at the poverty that exists in and around the area and MC is an excellent guide. It's a safe tour, lasting a few hours, and he makes you feel very comfortable as he is known well by the locals. Another draw of this tour is that most of the proceeds go toward supporting the people of the township rather than into those deep corporate pockets of some of the other "local" guided tour companies.

We walked through Langa, stopping at the local craft building, toured some of the different types of housing, and got a rich description of the history of the area. You are not pressured to buy anything but the opportunity is there if you'd like to support some of the local entrepreneurs. We also visited a local beer house and a traditional healer, all the while, hearing about many of the traditions and routines of daily life and survival for the families here. We really enjoyed our tour and plan to book it again with MC on our next trip to Cape Town!

“ProTeam SA - Tour of Langa Township”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

My girlfriend and I took a private tour of Langa Township with M.C. of ProTeam SA tours in May. What a great experience! To begin, ProTeam was very easy to work with and responsive to our calls and emails. The owner, M.C., picked us up from our hotel in Cape Town. On our way to Langa, he stopped for an orientation session and to give us a nice overview of both politics in South Africa and the part that townships play in South African history. We specifically requested a walking tour and that is what we got...it was wonderful! After parking near the community center and visiting with several artists, M.C. walked us through an eye-opening cross section of the community, from one side of Langa to the other (it's not that big!). M.C. grew up in Langa and we felt safe. We were impressed by his knowledge of the community. We sometimes stopped briefly to talk to people he knew, adding to the authenticity of the experience. Unlike a tour we experienced in Johannesburg, M.C. had worked out a fair price which he paid to the locals when we visited their homes or sampled beer at one of the township's versions of an informal bar. We were never asked to "give these people money" or pay a tip. M.C. had appropriately and thoughtfully included that in the price of the tour (which was very reasonable). The experience was just awesome and it was really powerful to not be part of a large tour bus crowd, but rather to be a couple, walking with a local, through the township. It was one of the best experiences of our trip to South Africa!

“A paid for tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

This was a strange experience, looking around what is essentially a housing estate albeit in a poor area, being taken into peoples homes which in most cases are one room with communal areas and taking photos. It seemed a little staged and very intrusive with the people obviously used to it. we visited a nursery school there where the children were grouped to sing a couple of songs to us, which was sweet and then they proceeded to climb all over you wanting to be lifted up. They again are used to being photographed and readily posed many using 2 fingers as a statement (and they were only 3-4 years old) As we started to leave (and donations had been put in the donation box) it was interesting to see them change character and do their best to assault the people present and obviously well versed in a punch to the groin being very effect especially at their height. This was laughed away by the guide saying it is a township thing not to show fear but be strong. It was worthwhile just be careful at the end

“Must do visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

We visited Langa as part of one of the township tours. Although everyone was welcoming and courteous we would not have tempted this trip on our own, and still would use a guide if we were to return. It is definitely worth seeing to give every visitor/tourist a pinch of reality. There is signs that locals are starting to benefit from tourist money into the area another good reason to visit the area. As previous reviewers have mentioned there is parts that feel commercialized and that it may not give a realistic feel on how it really feels for millions of people living in South Africa's townships. However saying all that we are glad we made the trip to Langa and we would advise everyone to do it.
