The history of South Africa is very much connected to this tiny island, from the Dutch settlers outcast here in the 1700s to Nelson Mandela's infamous 27 years here as prisoner before he rose to become president of the "Rainbow Nation". It's an emotional place that won't disappoint if you're at all interested in the South African story. I've heard normal tours are good, but can sometimes feel rushed or informative. I had the pleasure of joining a small, private tour led by one of Mandela's fellow inmates. We got to go to places on the island normal visitors aren't allowed to visit. It was a wonderfully intimate and moving experience. I would recommend booking a private tour if you're really interested in the island's history and want a more personal experience.
