Owner description: The apartheid nationalist government destroyed District Six in the 1960s. This memorial museum contains maps, photographs and other reminders of this old vibrant neighborhood. Site walks and tours in the Museum with ex-resident storytellers are also offered.

“Moving and personal insights into a bleak time in SA history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

This place is a MUST DO in Cape Town. Being a child of the 70's I grew up understanding about the awful racial segregation in SA. District Six made you understand what it was like for the communities that were destroyed in the name of "urban planning". Prepare to be moved, learn lots and walk away with a deep of understanding of apartheid and the long term damage that it has done to this beautiful country.
The museum is full up with personal insights and stories. It also has rooms that recreate some of the living conditions. I feel in love with the display of the street signs.
GO GO GO to district six. YOu will love it.

“A sobering view of the recent past”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

This is mostly a photo display of the surrounding neighborhood that used to be a vibrant place full of musicians, blacks, coloureds, restaurants, etc. Apartheid moved almost all of it out to the Cape flats andit is just now that people are starting to come back. Ate lunch at a very old, Portugese, restaurant, Dias nearby.

“District Six Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

The museum depicts the history of the people of District Six so well that I cried for days afterwards thinking of the displaced people of the District.

“Overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

The story of District Six is a good one- it just needs a better publisher. This museum seems to be all about remembering the good ol' times and forgetting that white people still live there happily and shouldn't be randomly kicked out.

“Fascinating insight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

The museum offers a insight into the lives of those that lived in District six a multicultural area that was re-designated as a white only area in 1963. The staff who work at the museum all lived in District six and are happy to share their stories, we were lucky to meet Tahir who really brought to life what it was like to live in District six. This musem is an important place to visit to understand recent South Africa history.
