“A garden in the middle of the town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Companies garden lies between the museum district and the busy city - in former days here the farmers grew the supplies for the ships, today it is a tranquil shady place to calm down, to have your lunch break and on weekends it is a spot where families gather together.
beautifully done, most of the floral species are marked and explained, lots of naughty squirrels around and birds birds birds.

“Happy place!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I have always really want to take my boyfriend to the Company Gardens in Cape Town, it’s situated in the center of the city and was established in 1652 by Dutch settlers.

It’s is truly so beautiful and with the backdrop of Table Mountain it’s like a little oasis in the middle of town. Having gone to school around the corner of the Company Gardens, we used to go there all the time and I have very fun memories of school outings there.

Some of the things that you can find inside the gardens are:

- The oldest cultivated pear tree in South Africa (circa 1652)
- A rose garden designed and built in 1929
- A well stocked fish pond
- Dellville Wood Memorial Garden, which commemorates the World War 1 battle at Delville Wood in France, in which a predominantly SA force of more than 3 000 soldiers was reduced to 755 survivors by German forces
- An aviary – a great favourite with children
- Restaurant – the Garden Tea Room
- Botanically and historically valuable trees
- Local arts and crafts along the avenue
- Grassy lawns and benches
- A herb and succulent garden
- Historic statues

We made our way down the garden paths and into the rose garden, checked out the magnificent Houses of Parliament buildings, chased some ducks around the pond, marveled at the beautiful St.George’s Cathedral and De Tuynhuys.

If you are visiting Cape Town, some time spent here will be very worthwhile!

On a hot day the Gardens were an oasis in the city. I wish we'd had time to visit he art museum. Beautiful green spot to cool off and enjoy local flora.

“Beautiful and peaceful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Company's Garden is a neat historical garden in the heart of the city. It dates back to the 1650s when it was used to grow vegetables and fruit to supply ships that came through the area. Now it has flowers and trees and plenty of squirrels. If you're lucky you'll spot the albino squirrel (we saw it one visit but not another). There's a decent restaurant if you want something to eat, or you can bring a picnic. Otherwise just enjoy a stroll or sit and enjoy the beauty and serenity. Parking available on the street. There's a museum, an art gallery and a library all nearby.
