My husband & I stayed here for 2 nights after spending 3 nights at Victoria & Alfred on waterfront (see review).
Check in was efficient. Allocated room on 3rd floor, we had specifically requested non-smoking (due to asthma) and emailed to confirm this. As soon as we got to our room we were hit with the smell of smoke. After looking around the room we were suprised to find several cartons of smokes left by the previous occupant. Obviously they had been smoking and also the cleaning was not very efficient. Reported this to staff who used a machine to 'remove' smoke and clean again while we were having dinner. This did seem to help but room was still quite musty smelling.
We also requested an iron and ironing board. Couldn't believe what we were supplied with, a tiny board with a torn cover. A sheet was provided to put over the board but this was stained, mouldy and damp - wouldn't put our clothes near it - yuk! We did use the Laundry service the next day which was hassle free and slightly cheaper than at V & A.
The room had not been renovated, tv remote didn't work, bathroom dated. On the positive side - bed was comfy, water hot and the room itself was quite large with nice leafy courtyard outlook. It was also $100 AUD cheaper than our waterfront hotel.
The pool, gym and eating areas of the hotel had recently been refurbished so were very pleasant and the gardens are lovely.
Reception area and especially near the tour desk is damp and shabby. Bar area and furnishings are in need of maintenance - paint peeling, cigarette burns on chairs - not so nice. In the corridor to our room there was unused furniture and picture frames stacked against the wall, again not very welcoming.
Wanted to try the Spa but it was booked out. Make forward bookings if you want to use this facility.
Breakfasts were great, dinner in Red Square nice but not great value compared to better waterfront eateries eg, Balthazaar, Baia. Couldn't get a table in the other restaurant (Mgoyo??) so we decided to go back into the Waterfront for our last night.
Shuttle buses to the waterfont were ZAR 75.00 per person one way and infrequent in the evenings. We ended up using Unicab at ZAR340.
We used the tour desk to book hotel driver to go to Table Mountain. Cost ZAR390 return. Also used hotel driver to transfer to one way to Airport ZAR 280. Both requests were handled efficiently.
Walked to nearby shops safely during daytime - no problems but would not recommend walking alone or at night.
All in all when asked would we reccomend this hotel? Depends upon your needs. If you want to use gym, relax by the pool, have spa treatments and are happy to pay for transport elsewhere or have a hire car then, yes - on the proviso you get a refurbished room.
If you were going to Capetown for the first time and wanted to do lots of sightseeing - Table Mountain, Robben Island, Cape of Good Hope and beaches tours plus great dining- I'd definately choose the waterfront.
