“Friendly staff but not a good experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

The hotel staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the room was lovely although I think outdated and old fashioned. Stayed one night and was not very impressed as check out time is 10am however at 8 am a staff member entered our room as he wanted to check the bar fridge this could have waited till we had checked out as i was still sleeping. At 9am the cleaning staff also knocked on our door but then said they would come back later, i felt very rushed and was made to feel like i had to leave my room. Went down for breakfast and was looking forward to the buffet, loved that the coffee is poured for u at the table however it was ice cold, the buffet looked well presented and a large variety of food was available, however the hot food i have never not enjoyed my breakfast and i found the hot breakfast uneatable. It was cold, tastless and even the eggs that are made to order were awful my omelette was over cooked and served to me in pieces and my partner asked for soft poached eggs she got hard poached eggs and when served to her there was water on the plate. This breakfast is R165, I would rather eat at spur for R20

The hotel has a prime location in central Cape Town near the V&A waterfront and close to good restaurants and shopping. The accommodations were comfortable, our room had an excellant view of Table Mountain. The breakfast offered in the lobby is typical European style, and is worth the money. The staff were helpful, and were willing to assist in any mannor possible.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of Table Mountain.

This hotel has clearly seen better days. Our room was small, the king-sized bed hard with lumpy pillows. The bathroom was old-fashioned and tiny. You had to set both the hot and cold taps in the shower to make it function. In order to operate WIFI you have to obtain a code from reception and type it in each time you use your laptop. The staff make up for the lack of comfort; they were all universally charming and helpful. We arrived at the hotel at 10.30 a.m. having endured an 11 hour flight from London. Although check in was not until 2, Muneeb, the guest relations' manager got us into our room at 11 a.m. The bar staff remembered our names and the drinks we liked. Even though our meal at dinner in the restaurant was almost inedible the waitress was efficient and helpful. The hotel is positioned near the V and A waterfront which many people love but we found the waterfront underwhelming - noisy with poor and expensive restaurants.

The service here was very good, the rooms were clean and comfortable. The location is perfect. It is only a few minutes walk from the Victoria and Albert Waterfront and the neighborhood feels very safe. We enjoyed both the bar and the restaurant. We were here for two nights and overall we felt we could not have had a better introduction to Cape Town.

Having read some of the previous reviews I was a little hesitant when our tour guide told us that we were booked into the Commodore. I shouldn't have worried. From first arrival to our eventual departure we had nothing but 5 * service. Unfortunately I was taken ill on our third day there. The hotel arranged for a doctor to visit within the hour. We had to stay an extra 3 nights but the hotel made sure that we had everything we needed. The hotel is handy for the Waterfront area which must have an eatery for just about every taste, along with live music. Thank you to all of the staff 10/10

This was our third stay in this very well positioned hotel only a few minutes from the Waterfront.
We enjoyed an excellent room on the executive floor with a balcony and wide ranging views. However the bathroom looked tired and was in need of new fittings if this was to be called an executive room. The staff were attentive and most helpful. The breakfasts were plentiful and the service adequate. We had to ask for toast and more coffee which we have never had to do previously. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay although we could be tempted to 'shop around' before our next visit to this lovel city. We certainly saw no suggestion of 'ladies of the night' and we were at the bar quite late in the evening!

Room Tip: Ask ,as we did for, a room with a balcony and a view.

I stayed 4 nights in this hotel at the end of April. I arrived late the first night and went down to the bar for a beer to bring back to my room because there is no mini-bar in the room. There is a fridge, but it’s empty. On two different tables I could see girls dressed and painted in a way that left no doubt in my mind what their profession were. It was so obvious that I wondered how they were allowed to sit there because this should be a hotel with a bit of “class” and reputation.
Two days later a colleague and I went down in the bar to see the second half of the Champions League semi-final after a long day at work. One minute after we had dropped down around a table two girls dropped down in the two opposite chairs. As polite as possible we tried to make them understand that we were interested in the football match and wanted to be alone, but it was not possible to get them to leave. In the end I had to make a deal that we bought them a glass of something (expensive of course) and then they would leave. Then I realized that they knew all the employees in the bar and they called each other by the first name.
How is this even possible? I can’t imagine another hotel in this class that would have allowed prostitutes to sit in the hotel bar and harass hotel guests.
For me this is enough to put this hotel as low as it possible on my list of Cape Town hotels.

JvanderMerwe, Manager at The Commodore, responded to this review, May 16, 2013
Dear Guest,

Please accept our apologies for the delay in responding and thank you for your valuable feedback.

Even though the contents of your letter is of great concern to us and most certainly not what we stand for or support in any way or form, at the Commodore Hotel in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, it is a reality and a challenge in every Hotel worldwide. We are very sorry to hear that you were exposed to this totally unacceptable behaviour by external patrons.

We have investigated the reported incident and can give you feedback as follows;

The only two “ladies” that have been in our hotel public areas within the last two months, were escorted by guests, and have also been asked to leave since. Our staff members do all wear name badges and are continuously trained and reminded to remember return guests’ names. Could this be why they knew each other? I cannot honestly comment on this statement any further, other than that we take your comment very seriously and have instructed our Duty Manager at night to be more vigilant and diplomatic.

As I mentioned, it remains a very sensitive matter (especially if these external patrons make use of our services and have a drink or something to eat in the public areas) however, we will do everything in our power to make sure this is eradicated from our business. It is not only for our own interest but also for guests’ safety and security.

If there is anything else I can assist with or if there is anything else we can do that will restore your faith in us, please feel free to contact me.

Yours Sincerely,

Japie van der Merwe
Deputy General Manager
