“Capturing local flavour”

Capetonian Hotel

Visted Cape Town alone in March 2005. Stayed at the Capetonian which was functional. Excellent breakfasts. Free bus to Waterfront. No external garden or space in which to relax though.

Wondered about best means of seeing local places without being herded around? The local Tourist office was splendidly helpful and pointed me in the right direction. Used the services of a local guide to get to the west coast nature reserve, around Cape Point, the Winelands & Kirstenbosch. One could allow 1 day for the latter! Personalisation costs very little more than the standard trips and enabled me to stop longer where I preferred. Best to advise your guide what your interests are and he can focus the trip accordingly. Guide has interest in Cricket and dancing - so test his knowledge!

“Nowhere to sit outside”

Capetonian Hotel

I stayed here with a tour group in November 2004. The hotel itself is not in a particularly attractive area (the business area) and once it gets dark, there is an unsafe feeling about the area.
The rooms are large and comfortable but beware, you either get a room facing Table Mountain with no balcony or a room with a balcony but no view except that of other tall buildings and the car part - this can be quite claustrophobic.
There is no outside space to sit in to relax or sit in the sun if required which again is claustrophobic.
Please see the previous reviewer in respect of food, alcohol and internet facilities.
However, the lift has to be one of the most clever lifts I have ever seen! You just button in the floor you want to go to, the lift arrives and takes you to the floor chosen - there are no buttons to press in the lift!
The free shuttle bus to the Waterfront was used frequently by some of my fellow travellers but it is only a few Rand by taxi to most places in the city.
I wouldn't stay here again because of the lack of outdoor space and the feeling of being unsafe if walking around the area.

We stayed for 6 nights in this hotel in October 2004. We found the staff very friendly and more than willing to help us if needed. Patrons should be aware that this hotel is a halal hotel and the food served throughout the day reflects this. It is possible to buy alcohol but only on the second floor.
The rooms were quite large and well maintained and amenities in the room are adequate. Apart from air-conditioning, we had a hair dryer, radio, t.v. and seperate desk and chair for reading and writing. No free newspaper is delivered to the room but if you go to reception you will be given a complimentary copy.
The selection for breakfast is huge, from toast to curry and if the serving area does not seem to have what you want they are very obliging and will try and help you if they can. There are facilities for using the internet but it is quite pricey, better to use the tourist information burea 5 minutes away.
The hotel is situated near the bottom of long street, the main tourist area and is within walking distance of most of the shops. If you must go to the waterfront complex the hotel runs a complimentary mini bus every hour.
I would certainly stay here again and for the budget price we payed it was good value.
One word of warning, during the day on the front desk sits "Captain" the hotels parrot, don't try and stroke it or you may end up with one finger missing.
