“A Boutique backpackers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

I recently spent 5 nights here during my trip to Africa. I thought it was a really great hostel. The staff was very helpful, the beds were clean and comfortable, the rooms were big and they had lockers for each individual bed in the dorms.

The staff, like I said, was really helpful. They helped us rent a car, and they could set up all kinds of excursions for you if you wanted. It was the best "concierge" type service I have ever experienced in a hostel.

It also had a nice bar. I never ate there but it was a nice place (with fire place) to grab a coffee or beer after a long day exploring.

The location was also great. It is just up the mountain from long st (the main drag). It was close enough to Long St. to go to the bars and shops, but far enough away for it to be relatively quiet around the hostel. I am a walker, and I walked to the waterfront and back several times (30 min each way).

All and all it was a great place to stay, and I will stay there again when I go back to cape town. My one little little gripe is that it was like 18 use for an 8 bed dorm, and in Africa that is a bit. It was 18 dollars well spent.

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review on Tripadvisor.

We are really to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the Backpack. We love our location too, near to everything you need, but far away enough that you can sleep well at night or admire the awesome views of Table Mountain.

It is great to hear you were able to use the travel desk.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the hostel again soon.

Kind Regards

What a hostel. The food was good, the bar was great for meeting up with fellow travelers and they had an in-house person to help with tours to Robben Island, Shark Cage Diving and such. Very relaxing and I always felt safe. The court yard is a great place to unwind after the day and enjoy the Cape Town air. Chose a single room and it was simple but nice. Its not a far walk from the nightlife area of Long Street. Remember to call a cab at night though or travel in a group.

Cape Town is a beautiful city, and if you choose to spend a time in The Backpack, you will find a very friendly staff, clean rooms, a cozy and cheerful restaurant, and ... gorgeous women from every continents. The Backpack is close to Long Avenue where you will find brisk nightlife. Safety is not a problem - they take care while you party or rest. It is a bit expensive for a backpacker accommodation but worth every rand.

The positives:

- Clean
- Good location
- Excellent Wifi-access in the whole building
- 8-bed dorms big enough to feel comfortable, safes in the big dorms
- Nice staff, even though not very competent. Good advice at the reception desk
- Nice bar where people meet, with regular events
- Involved in a community project in the townships

The negatives:

- Big and very impersonal
- Over-use the community project as a marketing point
- In winter, no heater AT ALL, except in the bar. Doors always open, which makes each room very cold. Best place to get a flu.
- Not cosy at all, except near the fireplace in the bar, where the entire population of the hotel try to get a seat in order to warm up in winter.
- Kitchen with only the strict minimum. Everything made to get people have dinner at the bar, where it is fairly expensive and does not look good

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Tripadvisor.

We are glad that you were happy with the services provided by the reception desk, and that you were able to meet lots of people while here.

In all of our rooms, private or dorms, there are extra blankets and hot water bottles. It is unfortunate that you might not have found those in your room to keep you warm.

We are sorry that you weren't happy with our dinner options in the cafe. Since it is winter, we have found that having one main meal option with a desert is a feasible solution for our guests.

We hope that should you visit us again, it will be a more enjoyable trip all round.

Kind Regards

I stayed in this hostel for 2 nights at the beginning of June and it was a great end to my trip. The hostel was clean and the staff were friendly. It is in a great location within walking distance to most things. The hostel is safe with a security guard and has a great bar for meeting people. I would definitely recommend staying here and I will stay here next time!

This hostel is very nice and security is guaranteed through an electronic passcode. The restaurant is nice and has good food, too bad a simple breakfast is not included with accomodation! You can make friends without a problem thanks to the good vibe the place transmits. The beds are very confortable but the rooms are variable in niceness and noise level (is you have a familiar room above with kids you are guaranteed an early morning). Be careful when walking around, the car park nearby (not the hostel one) has security guards but still I heard about two people who were robbed on that spot (it's better to come up Park Road).

Thank you for taking the time to review our hostel on Tripadvisor.

We value all comments that our previous guests pass onto us. It is unfortunate that you were to hear about muggings taking place a few streets away from us. I can assure you though, that the people involved have been moved and the area is back to "normal" again.

We are really happy to hear that you enjoyed your overal stay with us at the hostel. We always strive to ensure our guests have the best stay possible why visiting the Backpack.

Please visit our hostel again soon.
