We booked 3 rooms here for Christmas and New Year, my wife and I asked for a smoking room and were given room 3127. This was a bedroom and 2 sitting rooms with a shower room and a seperate toilet. Our travelling companions each had a double room which they found fine.
I,ve read most of the reviews for this hotel and cant beleive some of the negative comments, if you want Hilton service book the Hilton !.
The location is great for the V&A Waterfront, and is as safe as houses to wander about on a night, unlike the city itself which can be a bit dodgy.
The breakfast which was included in the price of our rooms was also excellent.
So to sum up, great location great food our room was clean and comfortable and yes I would stay here again.

We booked this hotel for our last night in cape town, because our travel guide said that it is nice and has a good value. But this was the worsest hotel in our 3 weeks holiday in South africa and we nearly have every day annother accomodation. I have no idee, why people on this website have a good opinion of this hotel, please dont trust them. The rooms and the whole hotel looks like an bad backpacker hostel. Yes it is clean and yes it is near the waterfront, but when you go back to this hotel after an sensationel evening on the waterfront you are very dissapointed, because you have to go back in this terrible hotel. And of course it hasnt a good value, we spend 50 Euro each for one night, what is is a shame for a place like this. So be aware of the breakwater lodge it is an very bad place and you will be very dissapointed. We were very luckey when we can leave this place.

This has to be the most overated overpriced dump I've ever stayed in. I paid £50 for a one night stay only to read the sign outside the hotel the night I arrived which announced a rate of R434 (£34!).

That aside the room I was allocated (1001) had to be the worst option in the place. It was just like my University halls of residence! DIY furniture, absolutely no effort made with decor. Flat, lifeless mattress and no air con.

I was wakened from my sleep by raucous laughter and really loud converstion between the staff, and between them and some late returning customers. This wouldn't have been so bad, had it not been after 1am. I had been up at 7am and had had a full day travelling. You just shouldn't have to get out of your bed to ask the staff to be quiet so you can sleep.

The only, and I mean the only plus point for this hotel is its location. But hey, for a measley R50 (and that includes a R5 tip) you can get a taxi to your hotel elsewhere. For only £33 I had got a wonderfully modern and stylish room at the Townhouse Hotel a few days earlier, and that included a buffet breakfast (with cooked included). I booked the Breakwater Lodge to see what other hotels would be like.

I had cause to be on the streets on my own on two nights and no one bothered me. Just don't wander around with cameras and the tourist backpack dangling from you.

Waste your money if you like, but this place is one big con. You're paying solely for the location...not for style, comfort or enjoyment.

I stayed here for 5 nights in 2005. The main reason I booked this hotel was a co-worker who had been to Capetown told me the V and A waterfront was the safest part of Capetown to walk around after dark.

I arrived way too early to check in but the friendly staff gave me a room to freshen up in (there was even a shower available if I had needed it). They held my luggage for me so I was able to take the Capetown explorer city tour bus until It was time to check in.

The room was basic but comfortable with a shared bathroom. The bathroom was only shared with one other room and the shower and toilet were in seperate rooms so there was never a problem having to wait. The hotel was only a 5 minute walk to the V and A waterfront where most of the good restaurants and bars were located. I was able to get picked up in the hotel Lobby for my tours to the Cape of good hope and the wineries of Paarl and Stellenbosch.

The rate was much lower than other hotels in the area I paid the equivaent of about 35 Euro per night. They do have larger rooms with private bathroom also.

The restaurant was quite good for a budget hotel. It was located in the Bar which had an excellent panoramic view of the Capetown skyline and Table mountain.

Every staff member I dealt with was friendly and helpful. The Breakwater lodge is an excellent option for anyone wanting to do the Western cape on a budget. I was speaking to an older man from England in the Bar and he goes to Capetown for 6 weeks every winter and they gave him a special deal so it would be ideal for anyone planning an extended stay in the Capetown area.

The rooms were not airconditioned, I would have been willing to pay a little extra for the option as some nights were a little hot but it was not oppresive or humid so I was able to sleep.

I would highly recommend this hotel/hostel wishing to see Capetown on a budget

“My home away from home”

The Breakwater Lodge

I spend about a month total per year at this hotel, and it is my home away from home. Yes, there are more comfortable rooms elsewhere, but the staff is great - the food is good - and the convenience is fantastic. If you want a hotel room to be part of your "vacation experience," this isn't the place for you. If you just need someplace comfortable to hang your hat while you are out and wandering - this place is perfect.
