After a journey from Auckland via Sydney and Jo'burg non-stop, anywhere to lie down would have been a result!
But... the Vendome, although not in the most promising location at first sight, was a pleasant surprise.
Service and quality overall were well above average and although it is not a seaside holiday hotel suitable for families who want to hit the beach or the pool, it is a good upmarket place for couples on holiday or business travellers.
Cape Town is still not the safest place in the world and it is probably advisable to use the hotel's taxis rather than the 'rent-a wreck' crew, but we did both ...and used the seafront buses and even a minibus once...with a closure system for the sliding door that involved the co-driver and a length of string! We also walked along the seafront a couple of times without incident. (We are alive to tell the tale, but friends who have known Cape Town well, over many years thought we were due for a psychiatric examination...so it's probably best to take their advice!)
Breakfasts were good at the Hotel, but otherwise we ate out at various places in the Waterfront and on a recommendation tried Panama Jack's. That has excellent fish and is an interesting place being well of the main tourist route, hidden in the commercial docks in a very unpromising area...but worth the trip. (definitely take the hotel's taxi there ....and book it back).
Overall we liked it a lot and after a trip to Hermanus , re-booked the Vendome for another 3 days on the way back.
