Our family stayed at the Mount Nelson on our first trip to RSA between Christmas and New Year. We arrived at 0700 after a long flight from the UK and were allocated a single bedded day room for 4 of us to use which with bags was far too small, not a good start. Pointer to the Hotel, first impressions count! Pointer to travellers from the Uk arriving on that early flight, book a room for the preceeding night so that when you arrive you can settle in and enjoy your first day. The hotel was full of mainly repeat guests and an assumption was made by most staff that all guests knew the ropes and certainly the best tables were reserved for the many regulars. Getting beds by the pool was difficult as was getting the concierge to operate effectively e.g. it took me 3 days to get a tennis coach organised (much to the chagrin of that coach and 2 others I met who were wanting work and had not been contacted by the hotel). We warmed to the place after a few days when it became apparent you had to push to get what you wanted. The weather was indifferent, hot when the sun was out but distinctly cool in the evenings and when the clouds and rain arrived! The service generally was good aside from the challenges mentioned above. It's a pretty 'colonial' style hotel located in the town so you need transport to get anywhere both for security and distance. The world at large arrives for afternoon tea so once again you need to know to prebook a table. If only the staff had not assumed everyone was a repeat visitor and someone spent some time introducing us to the hotel, pointing out how best to enjoy our stay (when the Hotel is full) things would have been better. We left feeling indifferent about the 'Nellie'.
