“Well worth a stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

This is a colonial style building just off Orange and Kloof Streets set below table mountain and just above the company gardens. It's a great location as you can see the mountain from the gardens and the pool area and access the downtown area from the Orange St entrance through the gardens. The bars and restaurants of Kloof Street are in easy walking distance.

The breakfasts were very good and served in the terrace by the outdoor pool and the gardens are a lovely place to sit and enjoy the fabulous weather that we had.

Many people come here to enjoy the English style afternoon tea - not for me but it seems popular. Rooms and meeting rooms are good enough for the standard though some of the fittings are understandably old fashioned given the nature and age of the building.

stayed here for a conference in April 2015. Really impressed by the hotel. Rooms large and clean and wifi fairly fast. afternoon tea facilities the best I have seen outside of the UK. The gym had all the necessary torture tools and I particilarly liked the threadmill with the large windows open and the breeze in your face.

food was delicious but the service was strange at times. Strange but good. The waiters tended to take part of the orders, then go out, to return a few minutes later to take orders again, and then repeat the procedure.

If you are planning on organising an event, this hotel is my recommendation. We were about 70 people.

Location is beautiful with the Table Mountain in the background. Some nice pubs and night clubs within a 5 minute walk. taxi down to the Waterfront takes 10 minutes.

We booked into the Mount Nelson for three nights on honeymoon - even though we live in Cape Town, we have always wanted to stay at the grand old pink hotel, and thanks to their excellent winter specials for SA residents, we could do so!
Our junior suite was lovely, light and beautifully decorated. Notably a very comfortable bed and duvet and wonderful shower (room 118). They provided us with a surprise romantic turn-down the first night of our honeymoon, which was a thoughtful touch. Unfortunately, due to stompers on the floor above us (we were woken up three times during the night) I approached reception early the next morning to find out if another plan to could be made to allow us to fully relax and enjoy our experience. Patrick at the concierge desk provided impeccable service, and absolutely made our stay. After offering me a range or rooms outside of the main hotel building (quieter - he personally took me to view each one), my husband expressed his desire to stay in the main hotel, so Patrick arranged for us to be moved to an exceptionally luxurious suite on the top floor for the rest of our stay. A true honeymoon experience!

Other highlights included the excellent breakfast every morning and of course the location - being able to walk everywhere around the city was an absolute treat.

The service at the Nellie is exceptional. Every single staff member, be it the maintenance person, tea waitron, desk clerk or baggage handler greeted us, looked us in the eye and were warm and friendly. This is what makes the Mount Nelson a stand-out experience. No matter who you are, as a guest of the hotel, you are treated to true luxury and warmth. Thank you for a very memorable honeymoon.

Great location, a few yards away from long street, 10 mins drive to waterfront and table mountain base. Oldest hotel..but nicely maintained.
I stayed in the main building , the hotel is spread out into various buildings. Suggestion to understand the understand the hotel well...one can get lost easily. Stunning views. I would have given this an easy 5/5...but room service was not consistent (some days I would have my complimentary water and some days I won't) and restaurants were disappointing...it takes them ages to bring food (they don't have sprite/7up). I ordered a malay roti (delicious)..i got it after 57 mins...

The front desk and concierge outstanding. A suggestion, they should know NESW directions and which way to pray for Muslims.
Pool side a must enjoy.
Buy advance tickets to most attractions from the hotel concierge and avoid long ques at the venue...same price.

Excellent service, food & wine at this iconic hotel with a super room too. Fantastic views of Table Mountain from the grounds. Walked to the 'V&A' waterfront via the Company's Gardens in half an hour or so.

We are so pleased that you took a lovely walk down to the Waterfront via the Company's Gardens - such a lovely way to take in all the sights and sounds of our beautiful Cape Town. And we are happy that you loved the views of the mountains from the hotel and from your room.

Attentive, genuine welcome to discreet service staff; breakfast is a leisure affair on the patio - rooms offer every creature comfort; taking part in the high tea is a must-booking essential! you spend at least one morning after breakfast relaxing around the pool area.

Room Tip: 2nd floor, facing gardens for peace and quite, greeting by the sunrise!

The Mount Nelson isn't a perfect hotel, but it comes awfully close. After an exhausting 22-hour trip to Cape Town, we were welcomed by a very gracious staff member who walked us to our suite - an upgrade to a suite, which definitely started things off on a good footing. The room was spacious and beautifully decorated (My daughter and I particularly admired the curtains) and more importantly, the hotel's grounds, pools, and amenities are tasteful and the grounds absolutely lovely. I sampled the fitness center as well, and it was clean and relatively spacious and well-appointed.

The breakfast buffet, which was included in the price of our room, was extraordinarily varied and delicious - they even had fresh oysters on some days (a personal favorite.) I was there for a business conference and we had our lunches at the Oasis, which was quite good, and during family time (a few vacation days added on) we sampled the dinner restaurant, which was also very nice. (It didn't hurt that the entire accommodation seemed inexpensive to us Americans due to the strength of the dollar, of course, but that was a bonus.)

The staff were very service-oriented, competent, and helpful. Everyone was friendly and eager to address any question or problem. We Ieaned on the concierge staff fairly heavily for tourism advice and overall the attitude was very courteous and the tips helpful.

I wish we'd been able to enjoy the afternoon tea, but we'll save that for next time. And there will be a next time.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of Table Mountain
