I was a long-time visitor to the Nellie when I lived in Cape Town. Grand and unpretentious at the same time, a real treat. Their restaurants are among the best, if not the best, in Cape Town. Their high tea is outstanding, rivaled in my experience only at the Del Coronado in San Diego. I've only stayed there overnight once, but it was a wonderful treat; our room was at the back of the property and overlooked Table Mountain, and was positively palatial. The hotel is just over the road (Orange street) from the Cape Town Gardens, a bucolic retreat with ancient oak trees and exotic plants that was a vegetable garden for Dutch East India company ships back in the 1650s. A theater (the Little Theater) and a cinema (the Labia, named after an Italian family of that name) are very close by. That said, like everywhere in South Africa now, keep your eyes open and your senses sharp when walking around. Cape Town is not as dangerous as Johannesburg but it's by no means safe. You'll be insulated from this reality at the Mount Nelson, but keep it in mind.
