“All that a five star hotel should be”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2012

I have stayed here many times for both business and leisure. Thre old-world charm that harks back to a bygone era has become increasingly difficult to encounter no matter where in the world you find yourself. Properly trained staff, excellent cuisine and spectacular afternoon teas are a given. The rooms and suites are typically large, usually with extremely generous bathrooms. Although breakfast is not what it used to be, it is still very good. the main heated pool and gardens are stunning and really, everything is as it should be for a hotel of this calibre. Unfortunately, it is not near the sea, but the mountain views offer some compensation. Even if you're a guest, you still need to book for the afternoon tea [have at least one during your stay] and the sunday lunch. If you prefer a highly modern hotel with crisp lines and loads of glass, stay at the Westin or Radisson instead. But they won't remember your name and make you feel nearly as welcome as The Nellie.

Room Tip: A room in the main hotel offers a better view, but some of the bigger ones are found in the seperate...

This hotel is more than a place to stay when in Cape Town - it is actually a destination in itself, one that's well worth a lengthy journey. I'm fully with Winston Churchill, who liked to relax here after the sea voyage.

Things I loved:
- the tranquil spa with its secluded dipping pool and heavenly jet-stream shower
- the flower scent of the garden at night
- the choice of single malt whisky in the bar
- the James Bond type of room service, with a trolley that converts into a white-tablecloth table
- the fact that the hotel has child-minding services
- the mountain view
- the bathtubs that are long enough for my legs, wide enough for my bottom... and then some

Room Tip: Hard to choose between looking out onto the gorgeous gardens or the majestic mountain, but I'd t...

I stayed at The Mount Nelson hotel for business for three weeks in November. It’s a very nice old colonial hotel in the centre of Cape Town. It is well maintained, and the staff attentive and friendly. The grounds are beautiful and it’s a small oasis in the centre of a city. To get out, the hotel runs a courtesy car service to the main areas, just ask the concierge they will arrange transport for you, it is dependant on demand.

High tea is served everyday and the lounge area becomes very crowded, especially at the weekends when you have to book a table even in the bar.

The bar food is OK, the menu is small but varied enough for good choice. The Planet restaurant is good quality but a little quiet and lacking in ambience.

This is a very very popular hotel for film crews so do expect for your stay to be like staying in Soho. I have actually never seen so many clients and colleagues in one place at the same time.

One word of warning, we were a party of around 14, and quite a few people did have problems with things going missing or being moved in their rooms. Do keep an eye on your belongings and lock up your valuables. Having said this, I don’t think it’s a bad hotel, but one or two bad eggs can really spoil a hotels reputation. We did complain and after some investigation they did actually find the one item that had actually ‘gone missing’. It remains a mystery why my actress’s clothes were riffled through in her wardrobe each day.

In Short. A good hotel in the centre of town, its clean and comfortable and overall the staff are very good. Good old Nellie...

Mount Nelson Hotel arranged a tour with Darrel Lee who took us to the Cape of Good Hope and through the vineyards outside of Cape Town.

Darrel was fantastic. His personal experiences through South Africa's growth and changes were shared only as we requested more knowledge and a better understanding. We were thoroughly entertained during our tour and would highly recommend requesting Darrel during your visit.

What a joy it was to re-visit the Nellie, as this hotel is affectionately called by locals. Instead of a concrete high-rise building in an urban setting, this city hotel is situated in an oasis of palm trees and beautifully landscaped gardens. When stepping into the marble floor foyer, I mowed into a world of elegance and luxury. The highly professional staff greeted me politely, directing me to the lounge where afternoon Tea was served. An excellent selection of cakes, petit fours and canapes is beautifully set out on an antique table. In the corner of the large room a pianist caresses the keys of a Grand Piano. One feels like royalty!
After my delectable refreshments, I took a walk through the large gardens to the swimming pool. To round off my visit, I enjoyed a Gin & Tonic under the palm trees.
I can't wait to be back, this time hopefully for an overnight stay.
My compliments to the staff and Management.

Room Tip: End of corridor suites are the best.

Without question, it's the best hotel in Cape Town. You are made to feel special from day one. Literally everything about the hotel is wonderful! I've travelled a great deal and stayed at many of the best hotels in the world and The Mount Nelson far exceeded my expectations and really impressed me. I am now altering my plans, so that I can return again later this year.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the main building. We stayed in Junior Suite but saw one of their entry level rooms and...

Don't trust your reservations at this hotel! We had reservations confirmed in August for a Dec. 28 reservation and they cancelled the day before we were due to check in. Outrageous and unforgivable!
