“Great hotel on great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2012

The Cape Grace is right on the Waterfront in Cape Town and it makes it so easy to just do what you want to do. You walk a few meters and you are right "in" the Waterfront with all its activities, day and night. The hotel itself is a beautiful and comfortable place, although I still prefer the previous interior design. Nonetheless I loved my stay there and will definitely come back.
The rooms are spacious and face either the waterfront or the Table Mountain. Both views are great and have their own charm. Food and service are excellent. The pool area is great, but not private. I wouldn't see myself easily walking in a robe through the hotel to the pool just for a quick swim. Overall I can say I love the hotel, have been loving it for years.

Room Tip: Depends on what view you wish, choose between mountain and waterfront view.

Our stay in the Cape Grace was amazing in so many ways. The hotel location is fantastic and the hotel was sumptuously decorated which carried over to our rooms. Our rooms overlooked the yacht harbor and had a breathtaking view to Table Mountain in the distance. The service people could not have been nicer or more helpful. The hotel's restaurant was marvelous, all our meals there were great starting from the breakfast included with our stay to the evening meals which a gastronomic delight, made all the more so by the knowledgeable and obliging staff, especially the sommelier who made some fantastic recommendations for pairing South African wines, which we knew only little about, with our entrees. All in all one of the finest hotels we've stayed in. We would return in a heartbeat except for the 20+ hours of flying necessary!!!

Tucked away on the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Grace Hotel is all about richness and texture and antiques and collections of all things that smack of the heritage of Cape Town. Think Dutch East India Company with a handful of quirky design cues, like ornate crystal chandeliers laced with unexpected odds and ends laced into their arms.

On first blush though, the Cape Grace might feel a bit old fashioned, but then you really look, and you realize that those two to-die-for antique French reception "desks" (not reproductions, I would argue) have been fitted out with inlaid computer screens. This is a hotel that blends historic and traditional designs with the best of modern touches.

Everything is done in a seafaring theme, hearkening back to Cape Town's role as a key trading port, but trust me that there is nothing contrived at the Cape Grace. They take fabrics and murals, tassels and exquisite antiques, collections of fishing rods and polo mallets, and throw them together and create a thoroughly tasteful and unique experience. When you get out of the elevator on each floor, you are greeted with a different tableau, which is carried out throughout the floor. This is a decorator's dream come true. No surprise - the hotel was remodeled from stem to stern two years ago by a local and very distinguished interior designer. The care taken in the design emphasizes what this hotel is all about. Attention to detail is the order of the day here.

The hotel had me, though, not at hello, but based on all the "nooks and crannies" where guests can congregate for a canoodle, a cocktail or even a cat nap. In keeping with the history of the area, several of the bars are "below decks", as it were, where barstools are worn around the edges, couches are comfy and one lounge area leads into another via discreet companionways. And a fun feature - there is a Whiskey Lounge, where members have their own cabinets in which to keep their own favorite blends. With a collection of over 400 whiskies from nearly every producing region including Scotland, Ireland, USA and Canada, no doubt whiskey afficionados would lose their minds here.

Rooms are as fabulous as the common areas - totally unique touches and immaculate design sense. And don't get me started on the spa, with a cozy rooftop lounging area. But the best thing about the hotel is the size - it all seems very intimate and, well, appropriate - not overwhelming or daunting. Situated on a little marina of multi-million-rand boats, the view isn't so bad either. I thought the One&Only was my favorite hotel in Cape Town...until I discovered the Cape Grace.

Room Tip: Every room is slightly different. Best to check out the website for a particular style you may like...

Our first night in Cape Grace was our first in South Africa. For various reasons, we had never been to the country before, and this was a "Grand Retirement" holiday!
The stay didn't start well because half-way through the flight to Cape Town from London, I started an attack of gastro-enteritis. Believe me, you don't want this sort of thing anywhere, but on a flight, even in Business Class, it's even more unpleasant. But we managed to get to the hotel, and five nights there convinced us that this must be up there with the best hotels in the world. Certainly, it's in our top 5. Incidentally, after 24 hours further struggling with the bug, we asked the hotel to get its doctor to attend, the efficiency in getting him to us so quickly was impressive, and he was superb.
This is the first hotel as you go into the V & A Waterfront. Its position is superb, every room has a magnificent view. We were on the side that looked out over the rest of the Waterfront and immediately in front of us one of the commercial quays, with Korean fishing boats and seals playing games in the water. The other side of the hotel looks out on to the private quay, with super luxury yachts, and the inland view, which is stupendous.
The bedroom was magnificent, spacious room, lovely bathroom with separate shower and also separate W.C., large entrance lobby and equally large wardrobe spaces. Eeverywhere was beautifully furnished.
The public areas in the hotel are equally luxurious. The food is very good, really good breakfasts, and the couple of evening meals we had were top rate - hardly Michelin Star standard but very good standard. The staff were unfailingly efficient, courteous, and very friendly. They were all prepared to go just that bit extra for you.
This hotel is most definitely on our list of "hotels we must go back to"

Room Tip: It doesn't matter, wherever you are you will get a superb view

I'm not sure where to start. Cape Grace has been recently renovated and the decor is really lovely, with unusual artefacts in the hallways, in the rooms and even in the bathrooms! It made for a less hotelly feel and a little more homely. We travelled with the four kids and they even put baby shampoo in the bathroom and a small step and a mini loo seat for them, along with mini robes and slippers.

All the staff we met were very pleasant and smiley , without being false and the position is fabulous, right near the waterfront and all the hustle and bustle, without being too noisy.

We had a balcony overlooking the pool and the marina and when the weather warmed up we managed breakfast out there, which was delicious. The cooked breakfasts were scummy and the portions were pretty good.

Although it is an expensive hotel, the rooms we had were spacious and the beds very comfortable. I just can't fault it!!

From the welcome drink - a delicious refreshing ginger/roibus cool tea, to the beautiful room, to the gracious and complete breakfast spread, it was great. We had a room facing table mountain overlooking the yacht basin and lucky for us it was clear and sunny everyday. We could even the new soccer stadium. The staff were very knowledgable and loyal to their hotel. Lance, the hotel driver, gave us a wonderful tour of the cape.

Room Tip: we had a wonderful view of table mountain. The amenities were the best. They even had liquid soap...

Located at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront the Cape Grace exudes elegance. From the personalised check in to the outstanding breakfast, amazing wine and whiskey cellar and top class accommodation, the Cape Grace is a true 5* hotel.
The Waterfront has so many top class restaurants at reasonable prices that we did not dine at the hotel but if the breakfast is anything to go by the dining will not disappoint. Rooms are large with beautiful bedding, large bathroom, ipod doc, desk, flat screen TV - all that you can ask for in a luxury hotel. Unfortunately our stay in Capetown was for one night only - next time we will spend longer at the Cape Grace.
