We had very high expectations from Aquila game reserve. On our easter break to south africa, we decided to take in a two night stay with aquila. We were family of five with children.
Firstly, The food is very average. A few variations, the buffet layout was the same every meal. They had some tourists come in for a day trip and there was no table reserved for in house guests for lunch. We were asked to wait in the reception. We thought that was ridiculous. The service overall is very poor. The entire staff is hired from a nearby unemployed village, which we thought was a very noble thing to do. But at the end of the day, this is a 4star property.. The staff has to be trained to do their job right. From smiling faces, to common courtesies. The staff looked unhappy to me. I hope they are paid well and taken good care off.
Through our two night stay, we havent slept a wink during the nights. The mice(as we later discovered) created a racket in our rooms. Running around the room followed by sounds so loud we thought there were animals stampeding. There are no telephones in the room and we were scared. After the first night we complained, and we were told that mice were natural to the forest area and sometimes they do get in. There was no attention given to resolving the problem. During the entire day the guest relation officer has avoided us.
The second night . The sounds started again. We decided to investigate. Behind the wardrobe there was a hole from which mice came into the room. we had to move the wardrobe to discover this. on the base of the wardrobe, was a entire dining area of the mice. Sugar sachets, creamers sachets and nuts. All the paper and foils were the cause of the sound. We then, walked up to the reception at 2am and got the security to come clean the place.
My question is, if the rooms would be kept clean and checked thoroughly, the rodents can be kept out. We were not offered any help to tackle this issue. Had the guests relations focused on solving the issue on the first day we would have had a no problems on the second night.
We demanded a refund for our stay, for which we were asked to email the head office. We send them two emails and have had no response. I will shortly upload pictures of the sachets.
The safaris that were offered during our stay, were copy paste of each other. Every single day and evening we went to the same route, saw the same caged animals, had the champagne and dried fruits next to the lions cage, heard the same information from different guides. We were bored.
South africa is a simply super destination. But animal safarI!! friends, give it a miss and head to kenya next time.
