We went to El Burro to celebrate our 3 year anniversary.
After making a few email enquiries about their pulled pork ( I just love those Food Network shows where they cook pulled pork, It just looks so delicious ) cooking process I decided to give the restaurant a try.
We are always up for something new and I love experiencing new tastes and flavours, so I was quite excited to get a taste of REAL mexican food.
We arrived at El Burro and the place was quite busy. It was a thursday evening and I never expected it to be that full.
We were shown to our table, which was right in the corner and I was a bit disappointed about that. I booked with the owner and explained to him that it was my anniversary and the table given to us was right in the corner, so we couldn't really experience the ambience of the venue and decor. BUT from what we saw the place looks great from the mexican things hanging from the wall and other mexican themed things like the waitresses outfits.
For starters we had the CHILLI RELLENOS & the CALAMARES A LA SARTÉN
The Chilli Rellenos was quite nice, its like a chilli popper except it isnt deep fried with batter but rather served open with the cheese oozing out of it. The pepper wasnt as spicy as i expected but well balanced.
The Calamares a La Sarten was GREAT. the lime and coriander really brings that dish together.
For Mains I had the PORK CARNITAS & CHICKEN MOLE POBLANO. Like i said I wanted experience the mexican flavour so I order 2 of what ( from the internet and friends reccomendations ) is supposed to be taste explosions.
The Pork Carnitas came served three ways which is cool, so you get three different spins on the tacos. The tacos where ok. After eating the tacos ( my first time ) , I can now say that i dont like them. They were nice but not something I would go out of my way to get.
The Mole was also described as this rich and spicy( 32 different spices used in it ) but was also not as flavoursome as what has been described to me. I was expecting more flavour. In all honesty it was a bit bland. The chicken was well cooked though. Nice and soft and the chocolate flavour does come quite leka through.
She had the RIB EYE ASADA, CON PAPAS ( medium ) and could not fault it. It was perfectly cooked and very very flavourful. Rib Eye is not my favourite cut of meat but when I tasted her plate I can truly saw that it was excellently cooked.
Let me say that I am not a tequila person. But DAMN those tequilas and Tequila cocktails are AWESOME. The CABRITO & CENTINELA really amaze me. Give me that tequila any day over some of the other brands that leave a rather bad taste in your mouth ( pun intended ).
She had a few other cocktails as well which we well prepared and flavour full.
It was a good night out. I had a lovely time despite those things which I nagged about now. I do want to go back because I want to taste those foods again and come to a conclusion about mexican food.
Closing Remarks :
Maybe the restaurant should consider doing something for patrons when it is a special event and bookings are made. I have made reservations at other places and when you get there, there is a card with a message or rose petals on the table. Its the small extra things that make a place unforgettable. HEY even the Spur sends you a ice cream if your celebrating something.
Just a thought
