That sounds harsh, but it's the truth. In fact it was so bad that after we informed our Inn what happened, the owner said she'd never send guests there again. I'm going to give a long review of exactly what happened.
Having trusted our dinner reservations to our inn, when I got the list I immediately checked them all here on TA. The negative reviews this place gets due to service are 100% spot on. I was wary but figured the good food would overcome any bad experience. Not so.
First, we were escorted to an area pushed off to the side from the main outdoor eating area, which felt completely disconnected from the rest of the activity. According to the manager (in her explanation to the inn regarding our fiasco) this is an extremely desirable area because it's "vine covered." It is actually a walkway to the adjoining hotel and has a spectacular view of the men's loo. There were two other tables in this walkway. We were invited to sit at a table with no chairs. Upon realizing this, the hostess left to find us something to sit on, explaining another table had taken our chairs to avoid sitting on a bench. We stood and waited.
Chairs were brought, the large chalkboard menu was stood beside us. This menu is the "specials", which are in addition to the very small standard menu. We decided on something from the specials as the main menu was mostly wintery comfort food (lamb stew, etc.) and it was summer.
We sat and waited. And waited. As our table was off to the side it definitely had the feeling of being a forgotten area, and it appears that's exactly what was happening. A waiter came and took away the chalk board, yet we had not placed even our drink order. We continued to wait. Finally someone came to take our order, but by that time all the items we were interested in on the specials board were sold out. The appetizers and the entrees. Obviously we found this incredibly annoying because at that point we'd been sitting without even a glass of water for 25 minutes and felt that had our order been taken in a timely manner, perhaps we would have gotten at least some of what we wanted.
So we ordered off the regular menu. The food was just average. Beautifully presented, but lacking in flavor, as if it were under seasoned. Plus it was summer and I wasn't even in the mood for my lamb stew. I recall hubby did enjoy his appetizer, but that's all. Meanwhile, the service was just plain disorganized. We didn't really know who our actual server was since one person would take the order, one would bring the food, one would clear the plates. Which might explain why we'd been overlooked in the very beginning.
Meanwhile, apparently that little aisle towards the hotel is the restaurants designated smoking area. 2 different times a woman who appeared to be the manager (she was not in a uniform like the others and had been profusely apologizing to the table across from us for something (as the manager would do) when we we were seated) - sent smokers over to our table and told them that's where they could smoke.
I know that last bit sounds unbelievable. But it's true. I am not one of those American's who gets up in arms about smoking - but I do know the law in South Africa and we were literally just starting to eat our main courses when this woman stood right next to us and lit up. Then later the same manager sent another smoker over and sat him at the empty table next to us and gave him an ashtray.
At that point, that was the last straw. We waited and waited for someone to clear our dinner plates, which they did not, until finally we got up and went inside to ask for our bill.
We told Sally at Atlantic Suites part of what had happened (we spared her the full story) and she was mortified she'd sent us there. She called the restaurant the next day and told her she wouldn't be sending guests there ever again.
