“Excellent concierge made Cape Town visit fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

We chose One & Only Cape Town for a 10th anniversary trip over the Christmas-New Year's 2012 holidays. We had a great time and would strongly recommend the hotel to anyone planning to visit the city or the area.

The hotel seems big but not massive. The rooms as very clean and well-appointed and our room included a view of the waterfront but mostly of table mountain, which was a great way to start each day as we had breakfast on our balcony.

The thing that made the hotel stand out most was the staff and the concierge service. MANY months before our actual trip, I contacted the concierge service for help with planning local activities and reservations. Cape Town and the surrounding areas have some world-class restaurants and I wanted to make sure we could secure some desired reservations. Their concierge staff provided outstanding support, helping to arrange airport transfers, tours and reservations -- and all went off without a hitch. They were always quick to respond and helpful with alternative suggestions for those times when our desired reservations were not possible.

The staff also arranged some fun New Year's Eve activities. Of the 3 dinners planned on site, we attended one in the ballroom which was tastefully done (although we were advised it was black tie and practically no one attended in that attire. not the hotels fault, but be aware lest you come in a tux and no one else has). There was also a band in the main lobby that seemed to start slow but had a full dance floor as the evening went on and played a great range of cover songs.

One & Only has a good brand reputation and the Cape Town location was a good representative. It was a great home base for our travels around the area and a fun place at New Year's as well as for drinks and time at the pool. Most of all, the staff and concierge team was a critical part of making our whole trip successful.

Room Tip: Room 405 has a little view of the waterfront and a great view of Table Mountain from the balcoming.

We are very pleased to learn of your positive experience dealing with our Concierge team and they were equally delighted to read this very kind review! We are so proud that the genuine hospitality of our dynamic and passionate team blew you away even before you arrived in the Mother City.

The activities around and within the resort over the Festive period certainly added to the wonderful ambience of celebrations and we are delighted that you could share this experience with us.

We are looking forward to hosting you for many more One&Only experiences.

we stayed 3 nights for Christmas, with our teenage daughters. It was a dream. Very nice welcoming glass of limonade, fresh towels, the rooms are huge and so well appointed with nespresso machines, the bathroom is perfect, the service is also fast and efficient.
Breakfast is giant!
We had a wonderful christmas eve dinner with little gifts in our bedrooms, well, it is what I call a 5 stars hotel!

I have stayed in quite a bit of luxury hotels in my life, but the ONe&Only added a few superlatives to my list of experiences: the largest standard room, the best hotel pool and, believe it or not, the best bar. All in all, the One&Only is an outstanding hotel - in fact, a mixture of city hotel and resort.

Location: It is located in the Waterfront area, just 200 metres from the Two Oceans Aquarium (BTW, very recommendable to get close-up with sharks). This means, you can safely walk day and night from the hotel to the Waterfront area with its picturesque harbour, the restaurants, the African folk art market, a plethora of shops, street music etc. To downtown, it is a 5-minute cab ride. Or, more romantically, you can take the boat from the marina to downtown.

Building: The One&Only certainly will not win an award for architecture - it is just a solid high-rise building with a marina and an aritificial island in the marina. On the island you find the spa, the swimming-pool and a number of hotel rooms in little chalets. Inside, the hotel is decorated in a warm, unobtrusive African-themed style. The interior is dominated by the bar scene.

Rooms: We had the cheapest (or better: least expensive) room category, a standard room in the main building. The room was incredibly spacious (63 square metres), with a large bathroom area including a free-standing bathtub, comfortable for two, a separate rain shower and a separate toilet. The room had a quite large balcony with a grand view over the marina to the Table Mountain. In fact, I could see the Table Mountain with its ever-changing "tablecloth" from my bed. Like all of the hotel, the room was decorated in warm, African-inspired colours. The room was equipped with a self-service espresso machine, a teamaker and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Food: We did not try the Japanese restaurant (why should I eat Japanese food when I am in South Africa?), but the more informal restaurant Reuben's served one of the best hotel breakfast I ever had, including fresh oysters. One evening, we had dinner a Reuben's. We found the food tasty and surprisingly inexpensive. However, next morning I was terribly sick with vomiting, diarrhea and fever. The South African doctor did not care that I had eaten oysters and beef tartare, but just asked "did you have chicken?". Yes, I had chicken curry at Reuben's, and this dish had probably caused the infection. I would again eat a Reuben's, but never again eat chicken in South Africa in summertime.

Drink: The hotel bar is outstanding. Believe it or not - I did not find the world's best bar in New York, New Orleans, Berlin or London, but in Cape Town. The bar menu itsself is a pleasure to read. They offer their cocktails, say Cosmopolitan or Manhattan, in three versions: "past", "present" and "future". "Past" is the classic recipe, "present" is a spiced-up version, and "future" is a highly innovative version of the classic cocktail, using home-made syrups and infusions. E.g. they serve the future Cosmo with a jasmine-strawberry froth and the Manhattan with a bilthong (!) schnapps. But not the cocktails alone are the show: for teatime and in the evenings, this bar is THE meeting place for the rich&beautiful of Cape Town, with breathtaking miniskirts and high heels all around. Good to see, that the bar crowd has become pretty multiethnic, with many mixed groups.

Pool: The pool is stunning. First, it is incredibly large. Secondly. it has not the usual turquoise color, but it is made of natural sandstone and glitzy black tiles, giving you the impression of swimming in a crystal-clear mountain lake. The pool service is impeccable, with complimentary sunscreen, drinks and food served poolside. The spa looks beautiful too, although we did not feel for the sauna in the South African summer.

Service: Everybody in this hotel - the reception staff, the concierge, the maid etc. - seems to be friendly, helpful and good-humoured, always smiling and ready for a little joke. You simply feel pampered at the One&Only.

Room Tip: For a breathtaking view, take a room in the main rise. The island rooms do not have the view but are...

This hotel has a refinement and grace that is sometimes lacking in 5* city chain hotels.

It has an air of sophistication and stylishness. Beautiful setting overlooking canals of the V&A Waterfront. The pool facilities on the island are fantastic albeit it pricey.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are gorgeous in the main hotel and the villas on the island a treat! Check out the bathrooms!

Breakfast choices in the hotel is very good. The signature restaurant also good and look out for specials they run.

The quality of staff varies in different divisions/departments of the hotel from mediocre to very good.

The ballroom is beautiful and lends itself to upmarket functions. The food at functions is well above average.

I'll go back for a pamper!

The Hotel is looking tired and unkept; staff are totally unattentive and clearly do NOT understand 5 star-service delivery or etiquette.
Booked at the Spa, on arrival was TOLD we booked for a massage (which we did not), the staff member on duty was very hostile and rude; took a lot of explaining before they met our request.
Asked to complete a registration card, after this handed an iPad to complete the same detail.
The treatment was well below standard and during the manicure the side of my finger was cut, the therapist hid behind some or another excuse.
Must mention too the Bathrooms were absolutely filthy.
Booked the One and Only Spa in anticipation of enjoying a relaxing upmarket and memorable Spa experience; instead walked out feeling ripped off.
Think twice before you visit this establishment!

The one & only is a beautiful resort, right next to the V&A waterfront, the bedrooms are beautiful and you can see seals swimming from your balcony. The main reason to stay here rather than elsewhere however is the service, we stayed twice here and we were remembered as we came back and had personal welcomes from many members of staff which is frankly unusual in a hotel of this size. Breakfast was fantastic, as was all food eaten there. I highly recommend the afternoon tea! Cannot wait to come back, it really felt like a home from home and next time I will use the spa!

We are very excited to read about your positive experience at our beautiful resort. One of the aspects that we strive to achieve would be the personalized service in creating a home away from home.

We are delighted to see that we were able to meet your cullinary expectations from sunrise to sunset. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day and throwing in some sweet treats at afternoon tea does not hurt either!

We look forward to welcoming you "home" soon!

This is a great hotel with lovely rooms and great decor. However I am sorry to say that the breakfast service was not up to scratch until we had a chat with management. Dinner was disappointing, not what it was under Gordon Ramsey. We found the hotel magnificent three years ago. Possibly a mistake to return.
