“Best hotel I've ever encountered”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

This hotel is stunning. I stayed in the least expensive room ("traveller's room"), and it was extremely comfortable and well-designed with high-quality finishes. The steam room and sauna were wonderful, and the gym is fully stocked and pleasant. I also spend some time by their pools and at the pool café - beautiful view of Camps Bay beach. As long as it's not too windy, it is a great spot! If I ever return to Cape Town, this hotel is at the top of my list for a romantic getaway or simply a restful spot to enjoy the sea view.

We stayed at The Bay Hotel in October, for two nights. We were delighted with the location of the hotel, directly across the road from the beach, and right amongst all the cafes and restaurants. The room (Club Classic) was spacious, clean and comfortable. I've never been in a room with so much closet space, but the cupboards were oddly shaped with catches/locks awkwardly placed. The property is getting old though, and the bathroom showed this. It was a bit poky, and whilst it had been maintained well, still felt a bit old.

The included breakfast was excellent, with lovely views. On a sunny morning though, sunglasses are recommended.

On check-in, we were pressured into their twice weekly free drinks/hours d'oeuvres, and before we had a chance to think about our evening. In the end we didn't attend. We walked past though and plenty of other people did, so they wouldn't have missed us.

The restaurant is very small, and a bit formal. I miss the days of a casual coffee shop - especially when it is teeming with rain outside.

Parking is available. We weren't aware there would be a charge for this, and so on check-out, we were asked if we had been told. When we responded no, the receptionist immediately responded that they wouldn't then charge us, and removed it from our bill. We were impressed with this, as we were prepared to pay.

I don't really see The Bay as a resort hotel. It is a bit cramped, and focused around the swimming pool. As it overlooked the pool, the room had no privacy and I immediately had to pull the net curtains, which defeats the purpose of having a view.

But as a base for our explorations The Bay was very good.

The Bay Hotel is truly a top resort! The location is in Camps Bay in Cape Town and is walking distance to excellent restaurants and beach front. Turn around and you are looking up at the Twelve Apostles mountains. The service is top-notch and the food is great! There is pretty much no place in the hotel with an unpleasant view, mountains in the back, beach in the front. I highly recommend. There is also a car service in an Audi or Porsche that is complimentary and will take you as needed to eat, etc. and pick you up. The hotel is a bit on the high-end of price, but you definitely get what you pay for.

We recently spent four nights at the Bay Hotel. We arrived late at night and were so amazed when we looked out the window the next morning and saw that beautiful beach and the crashing waves. The location of the hotel is great, easily within walking distance of great restaurants and shops. While the weather did not cooperate for two of the days, the hotel staff was great to try to find is other things to do (don't miss the market at Hout's on Saturday and Sunday). We also enjoyed a great dinner at the Retreat and should not be missed. All in all it was a great first leg to a wonderful South African vacation.

Room Tip: AS for the Bay side of the building.

My husband and I recently celebrated a special anniversary at The Bay. The staff kindly organised some bubbly which made the occasion special. The location is wonderful and overlooks Camps Bay beach and is close to shops and restaurants. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was lovely.

We have now stayed at The Bay twice and I am not convinced that I will return. The rooms are becoming dated and the doors on our balcony were broken. The TV was not properly mounted to the wall and had masking tape holding it together on the bracket as well as the cables dangling down. I suppose I expected more from a Hotel with a great reputation. Also the cleaning staff did not remove empty glasses when they cleaned our room.

Overall a great stay and the staff did go the extra mile to make our anniversary special.
Great location

The location of the hotel is superb right across from the beach.

All the team made every effort to ensure that our stay was an excellent one and were very attentive, often welcoming us by name.

As this was our honeymoon the hotel and staff did a few things that were very romantic and thoughtful.

We had dinner in the sister hotel The Retreat which was a perfect evening - service, food and ambience were superb.

One minor improvement they could make would be to sort out the wifi internet. My wife and I had trouble keeping a connection and the speed was slow. Also the wifi was only free up to a limit which for a hotel of this quality and cost is not acceptable anymore.

WOW! We went to South Africa with very high expectations, and I cannot believe it exceeded them in everyday. All three places we went to were incredible in their own way, but the Bay Hotel was unbelievable! We booked diner at their other property the Retreat and WOW again. Robin is a star and the dog "wonder" was a real added treat to the whole experience! This place is a cannot miss, cool little shopping areas, great beach, an unbelievable Breakfast and really nice rooms with great views! Go there now!

Room Tip: Did not try the Spa but it looked incredible!
