“Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

Great views, great position, this hotel is well know in Cape Town and lives up to its reputation. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Wi-fi is good and the restaurant is superb. I stayed here for business but would recommend for business and pleasure. The pool area is perfect for an afternoon swim and cheeky cocktail.

Room Tip: All rooms are sea facing I believe but I would request a room on the 1st or 2nd floor as you are hig...

I stayed at the hotel last night. It is very well located and used to be a very upmarket hotel. It has unfortunately changed. We asked for a twin room when we made the booking. When I arrived at the room is had been made up in a double bed. Reception apologised and said they would have it changed before we got back from dinner. It was never done. The back out curtains was to small for the windows so the next door building's lights shone into our room the whole night and we barely shut an eye. The restaurant was unfortunately also not what it used to be. At least the view is amazing.

For our purposes, the Ambassador was a nice place to sleep in between days spent touring the surrounding areas. The sound of the waves crashing made for restful sleep for the most part, but the lack of air conditioning had us waking in the middle of the night, uncomfortably warm. We learned to open the sliding glass door or window slightly, to allow for air circulation. One person in our group had trouble with the air conditioning for a couple of days during the stay.

Our room was very small and more typical of a European sized room. It had plenty of clothes storage, though, in the closet and shelf unit. The lighting in the room was sufficient, but not outstanding. The bathroom was also very small and would only accommodate one person at a time, but at least there was a large mirror in the room, which helped. The sink was tiny and there was almost no counter space for toiletries. The shower had a European "half" door, which made for a wet bathroom after any shower.

Breakfast and the view from the restaurant were a definite positive. We enjoyed breakfast each morning as it was included in our room rate. The menu had a nice variety and the view over the bay was outstanding. The wait staff was friendly and courteous.

Another positive is the neighborhood. We enjoyed a long walk/jog down to the water front park area one afternoon. There are lots of restaurants and cafe's within walking distance of the Ambassador, as well as scenic walking by the water.

We were very satisfied with the service level of all of the employees at the Ambassador. We needed laundry done twice during our stay, and it was an easy and timely process. Also, the bar staff was quick to help.

I would suggest springing for the front facing rooms with a view or even a suite, if you plan to stay here. We had gotten a pretty decent rate/night, so I think we were relegated to the side facing rooms without much view. Our room, 409, had a balcony, but it was not equipped with nice seating and was a little run down.

If we had chosen the Ambassador for the purpose of relaxing and spending more time at the hotel, the lack of amenities and tiny rooms would have been a bigger disappointment, but it's all a matter of perspective and expectations. The overall condition of the hotel was ok, but it could use some more upkeep on the inside. It appeared that a modern renovation had taken place some time in the last several years, but it lacked the polish of a nice resort hotel. Given the room rate of $120-$150/night with breakfast, it was a pretty good deal, and the expectations should be in line with the price.

Room Tip: Try the ocean facing rooms.

My colleague & I checked into this magnificent property and what a treat it was to stay at the Ambassador. Excellent rooms and breathtaking view. For the money we spent, we could not have bargained for anything better. Service was prompt and breakfast was a very delicious spread.

Strongly recommended to all travellers.

Breathless location that can only be beaten by a cruise ship! Stayed here as a change to my usual Cape Town hotel, whilst on business. Easy secure parking, minutes from CBD and leisure areas.
Ample sized rooms, clean and comfortable. Don't penny pinch and take the side rooms, go for the full on frontal rooms.
Free wifi throughout.
Lacks a lounge area.

Room Tip: Don't go for side rooms. Ocean surf can be noisy, higher rooms may be better.

Ocean-lovers will hardly find a better location - to fall asleep and wake up with the sound of waves hitting against the rocks below is fantastic. My husband and I often stay at the Ambassador for a romantic week end, and we always go back. Apart from the magnificent setting, the SALT restaurant has equally scenic views and good food. Especially the breakfast is superb.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea-facing room.

Location means a LOT, yet to be kept in reception for over 4 hours due to some miscommunication between booking office and front desk, after a 36 hour transit trip, was a bit disappointing. Made the mistake also of NOT pre booking ocean view room, hence ended in a cramped side view room. Alas, breakfasts in the restaurant made up for MOST of this, as the views are breathtaking!Food excellent too. Exterior of hotel needs maintenance. Yet, if you managed to overcome check in issues, plus if you booked a seaview room, this will be a GREAT experience. Location to Camps Bay, Bantry Bay, and loads of bars and restaurants really good too! With all my complaining, have booked here AGAIN for my next trip to Cape Town in two weeks time:-)

Room Tip: Insist AND PAY for a oceanview room, you will NOT regret it!
