Decided to go to Sun City with the family. Not really being a resort type person, I was a bit apprehensive but my travel agent assured me that it was great and for the kids (4 and 9 yrs) there would be lots to keep them entertained. We stayed in the Sun City Hotel, often referred to as Main Hotel and although the entrance looks a bit like what you would imagine a Las Vegas hotel to look like, the rest of the experience is really upmarket and African. We stayed in one of the recently re-furbished family rooms and it was really lovely. Real attention to detail was evident and the whole look and feel was fresh and clean with a hint of oriental. It really felt homely. We were lucky enough to have a room on the 3rd floor which opened onto a lawned terrace. This added to the feeling of space and the kids thought that this was the best thing since sliced bread! Although the Valley of the Waves was closed for routine maintenence, there was still plenty to do and the kids really were awe struck by the whole resort. Although it is a resort, it is so well designed and laid out that (hard to believe that it is over 20 years old) you feel like you are in neatly manicured tropical jungle. I also think that May is a great time to visit. The weather is fantastic! It got up to about 30 degrees C on the Saturday and we could even sit out in short sleeves in the evening. Blue sky, no wind, no humidity, just really comfortable and another surprise, it didn't feel busy at all. we kind of felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. We took a trip up to the Palace just to have a look and for the kids, this was like walking into a Walt Disney movie, the land of make believe. The breakfast was out of this world and even though a buffet, the quality and presentation was magnificent. My son Jack, who eats like a bird normally, had at least two crossaints, bacon, fruit and yoghurt. On the Saturday evening we decided to go for an early dinner and chose Santorini (at the Cascades hotel next door) as we wanted something outdoors and casual as we had the kids with us. WOW, it really blew us away. The perfect choice, the setting, ambiance, the food and the service. When our waiter (Denight I think, not sure of the spelling) took our order for the kids and drinks. He said to us (which was a first for me) "your drinks will be with you in approximately 3 minutes and your food in approximately 12 minutes"!! We looked at each other and said "lets time him" seeing he had thrown down the gauntlet. Well he did not dissappoint. Drinks arrived as promised, within 3 minutes and the food followed about 10 minutes later. The quality of our meal excellent and the portions were if anything, on the large side!
Overall a great experience and we never even got to play golf, go into the Pilanesberg Game reserve. Next time maybe!
