This is truly what you hope for in a Bed and Breakfast, stylish, thoughtfully appointed, quiet, private, with gracious engaging hosts, who provide all of the comforts of home and the luxury of an exclusive hotel. Located in an upscale very residential subdivision high on a hillside, you are only minutes from the highway; your exit from the subdivision passes a gas (petrol) station, as well as the large upmarket regional shopping Waterfall Mall another half kilometer further down the hill en route to the highway (department stores, fast food, you name it). This is a neighbourhood you'd feel safe going out for an early morning walk before breakfast. Free parking is available on their beautifully landscaped driveway, and all six rooms come with free wifi (with a good fast connection). Some rooms, like ours, are located on the lower level with their own private entrance door and windows adjoining the nicely landscaped moderate size backyard which contains a nice swimming pool; the other rooms are located in the home itself. The property is secure, fully fenced, and the only access to all units is through the house itself.
Sun City is a forty minute drive on good highway (why would anyone pay to stay there when you can stay here?) and the gates to the Pilanesberg Game Reserve (don't miss it) are another five minute drive further.
Our room was really a suite with a separate outside entrance on the lower level overlooking the backyard garden. The floor was fully tiled in a terra cotta style, and was wonderfully decorated with a very comfortable king sized bed, four feather pillow, (2 larger, 2 smaller), very fine linens (well above upscale hotel grade), two end tables with lamps and drawers, bedside rugs, decorative throw pillows, a dresser, an armoir, a chest, a writing desk with chair and writing lamp, a bar fridge (stocked with 2 beer, 2 bottles of sparkling apple juice, 2 bottles of drinking water, a bottle of South Africa wine (Sauvignon Blanc)), and an ice cube tray, a mid-sized LED television wall mounted, a remote, a quiet upscale air con unit with remote, and an ensuite bathroom (accessed through a doorway but no door) which contained a walk in shower with hand held spray, double sink vanity with lots of counter space, terrycloth towels (2 bath towels, 2 hand towels), 1 soap, 1 body wash, 1 shampoo, 1 hand cream, and 1 roll of toilet paper, and lots and lots of hot water.
Breakfast was included in our room rate. Our hosts cheerily asked what time we would like breakfast and we arrived to find our table by the window set, with a glass of orange juice, and a bowl of chopped/cubed assorted fresh fruit, with the self-serve buffet nearby stocked with cold cereals (fruity granola, corn flakes, bran flakes), milk, tea or coffee, and toast. Our hosts offered a choice of hot breakfasts and we chose the scrambled egg which really was more of a high end souffle served with a style befitting an upscale Home Fashion magazine - which would be a pleasant surprise anywhere else but here, given the whole place looks like it belongs on the pages of Architectural Digest. Actually, I would be hard pressed to confirm what makes this place so very nice, but the eclectic and personal decorative flair of the owners, their sense of style and class, their homey presentation, all combine to give you a unique experience; you feel pampered but almost like a friend of the family, you are treated like a guest but not in a commercial sense, you revel in a sense of luxury without feeling that anything is an ostentatious display to remind you of that. In a word, you experience comfort. And everything is very clean and all the linens quite fine and new looking.
Are there any negatives? Well, my souffle was a tad less tasty than it looked, but perhaps that is because it looked so good that I was a little disappointed that it simply tasted well made. And I was offered to take a dip in the pool to cool off following my late evening arrival, but I declined -- the next morning I was glad I did as the pool looked like it needed a good skimming. But on closer check the water and the pool was quite clean so one should expect some leaves, I suppose -- but there again, it is the sense that everything here is superlative, so when you do see something that is merely good, you catch yourself.
And perhaps there is the rub. If our hosts have anything to concern themselves with it is their knack for heightening expectations. Check out the before and after photos of their home when you are there and marvel at what a fabulous job they, and their architect, have done. But it is the hosts who truly make this place what it is. Did I ever think a B&B could be this good? -- no. Will I have raised your expectations now unfairly? -- maybe.
But let me give you one more example of what I mean.
Our arrival was unannounced - we did not book ahead. We show up at their door, at 5:30 in the evening - no answer. We telephone. Our call is directed to our hosts' cell phone and they express concern that guests (unscheduled guests) have arrived and they are not there. They are an hour and half away en route home from their vacation; and they apologize! They promise to arrive by 7:00 p.m. and they do, and instantly make you feel like you are their most special guests.
They make you feel special, because, in that most rare and most comforting way, they show you that you actually are.
Google Terra Casa Rustenburg to get more info. from their website and plan ahead and definitely MAKE A RESERVATION. They are so often full they are thinking of renovating to expand the number of rooms.
