“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

We had a wonderful time during our 2 night stay. Unfortunately it rained the entire time but there was so much to do at Kwa Maritane that we were never bored. Highly recommend and will definitely return. Thank you very much!

We had a lovely stay at Kwa Maritane - the game drive and boma braai are a must do - the staff are very friendly pleasant and helpful - i would have liked a room with a better view but it was nontheless very comfortable - the breakfast buffet was very good and the pancakes are an absolute treat - sadly i did not manage a spa treatment but next time for sure - thankyou for a lovely stay - will definitely return.

Room Tip: I always ask for a king bed (non smoking) room with a view and a tub .

I have been going to Kwa Maritane for 20+ years. Our family has timeshare there and we try to go each February. The lodge is upmarket without being stuffy, and there's a good mix of self-catering, but room service or restaurants (the breakfast is legendary!) if you want it. Its situation within the Pilanesberg park is gorgeous. Pilanesberg itself is situated in an ancient volcano, now in an area covered with large boulders and grassy hills and plains. The park is home to the Big 5, as well as cheetah, and I can proudly say I have seen everything here, including a spectacular sighting of a leopard just a few metres away, drinking from a stream at 4pm in broad daylight.

Room Tip: The nicest rooms are right at the end, next to the fence. They have little plunge pools. Spend a lit...

It is always a pleasure to welcome back returning guests, especially those who have been coming here for so long and it is extremely rewarding when they still enjoy their stay with us, year after year.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a superb review about the Lodge – it is really appreciated. Also, I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about the Pilanesberg – it is a truly amazing place and the chances of seeing such a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big 5 (quite often very close up) is almost guaranteed.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon for some more Kwa Magic!

Kind regards

Gavin
PS: Your tip about getting a room with the plunge pool is very valuable, but as they are in high demand, one must book well in advance – thank you!

As a frequent visitor to KwaMaritane (chalets), it is always a please to return. Other than the occasionally variable-service at reception, everyone is great. We ate in the restaurant a few times and the food had improved a little and can now be described as excellent. Also good wines are available.
The game viewing during our last visit (self-drive) was not as great at it can be, but we had some wonderful sightings of a wide-variety - many birds and also (unusually) good leopard.

It is always wonderful to be able to welcome back returning guests and I appreciate your taking the time to post your review.

Thank you for your remarks about the staff (apart from the “variable” service from reception!)

Your kind comments about the food are most appreciated and I will certainly pass them on to the Chef.

I am sorry that your game viewing did not turn out be that great. It is always “luck of the draw” but it is incredibly fortunate that you managed to see leopard!! Hopefully on your next visit, the sightings will be back on track.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Kind regards

Gavin

We have stayed at KM on a few occassions, both in their rooms and in their chalets and have had good experiences.

Our last visit, with overseas visitors) was to stay in a chalet and were fortunate to see a fair bit of game from our verandah and pool.

The only downside was our next door neighbours. Clearly the unit had been booked by parents but given to their kids to occupy. They enjoyed playing loud music (not what we expected in a bush lodge) and had wild parties in and around the pool. It was sometimes hard to tell just how many kids were staying in the chalet but with the number of bottles left laying around it must have been a lot (far more than the chalet should accommodate).

The chalets have a communinal walking area in front of them looking into the game reserve but we were reluctant to make use of it as we had to go past their chalet and avoid the empty bottles strewn around.

Despite a calls to reception and although the chalet was visited daily by the cleaning staff, nothing seemed to be done about what was going on, .

We enjoyed the park, the restaurant at the hotel but our whole experience was disappointing because the occupation of our neighbouring chalet was not properly managed.

Thank you for your comments regarding your September stay at Kwa Maritane.

Unfortunately at the time of booking, we have no idea how a particular guest, or group of guests, is going to behave. It is sometimes extremely difficult to control the conduct of guests, particularly those of from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, who do not appear to have any consideration for the rights of other guests.

We do have a strict ten pm no noise policy, although any excessive noise at any time of the day or night will not be tolerated.

It is most unfortunate that you did not meet with me or any one of my management team while you were still at the resort, so that we could have personally discussed these and any other issues which you may have had during your stay here.

I like to offer my sincere apologies for any inconvenience which you experienced and trust that on your next visit to Kwa Maritane the resort will be of a standard more in keeping with your expectations.

Regards

Gavin

We stayed here for 1 night and it was a very welcome break after a day at Sun City. We were walk-in clients and managed to get a good rate for dinner, bed and breakfast with a game drive included. Our room was clean, nicely made up and almost right by the boundary fence of the lodge - a perfect, peaceful location. Dinner was an abundant spread and we had a stunning view with baboons calling from the nearby hills. Our game drive was fantastic with rhino, elephant, lion and many other animal and bird species spotted. Our guide was knowledgable, helpful and friendly. Breakfast was just as good and we sat overlooking the waterhole while a herd of wildebeest drank and the weaver birds built their nests. The lodge hide is very nicely done and access is by an underground concrete tunnel. Wonderful if there is something to see. Service was pretty good - just had 1 experience of unfriendliness but otherwise we will be back!

Room Tip: Rooms away from the pool area and overlooking the boundary fence are great

Our family of six (adults) stayed here from new years day for two nights.

On arrival, 2pm we checked in, and were showed to our rooms by two very helpful gents. As we had been travelling for a few hours we decided to go for some lunch, and sat in the restaurant as there was a herd of wildebeest at the watering hole in front. We decided to order off the menu and not the buffet... big mistake, our food took over an hour to arrive! when it did arrive I asked for some tomato sauce (ketchup) where a frantic scramble ensued, only to find out that there was only one bottle in the entire restaurant.
The waiter stood at the table, waited for me to use the sauce, and promptly snatched it away to take it to the next table (lucky I didn't need more!!!)

Lunch over... we went to book a game drive at the wilderness centre. Unfortunately we were told that the drive for the evening and the next morning were completely booked, which as new arrivals we found completely unacceptable. Surely if you offer game drives you should be able to cater for as many guests that wish to go. The reason given that we couldn't get on the drive was that it's a very busy time. Well... you know its going to be a busy period, it happens every year, so you should organise it accordingly.

I have also read many reviews about the terrible service!!! I'd say that they were probably 50 percent correct, the Male staff were fantastic, the game rangers brilliant, but there was a problem with the apathy of the female staff... from reception to waitresses. I don't know why it seems to be a male/female problem, only that management need to stop telling people that they're going to do something about it...and yet we all experience near enough the same issues with the staff.

The dinner was really nice, provided you got there early enough. It appears that although dinner is served up until 10pm, it's only kept hot until 8:30pm!!!

The rooms were fantastic, with a turn down service every evening, game drives that we went on were also a lot of fun with a really knowledgeable ranger...

All in all, the positives outweigh the negatives... I still won't be going back though (unless things change for the better and they return to how they were when we first came to visit)

Thank you for writing such a comprehensive review of your recent stay at Kwa Maritane.

We are always concerned when a guest does not enjoy even a small part of their experience here and I can assure you that we take all comments and concerns raised by our guests extremely seriously.

Your comment regarding the food service and the apparent shortage of tomato sauce is of grave concern to me. Although without having specific details of your order or the surrounding circumstances I cannot fully investigate, however this has been addressed with the restaurant manager. There are obviously more than one bottle of tomato sauce in the restaurant (there are, in fact, ten!) and it is unclear why this problem occurred.

In peak season, we usually take about 200 guests per day on game drives, although we can accommodate about 600 guests on the resort. Guests are also able to use their own vehicles to drive through the Park, so we cannot assume that every one of the 600 will make use of our game drive facility, and we base our capacity for drives on historical data.

Game drives are on a “first come, first served” basis and it is recommended that drives are booked well in advance. It is extremely unusual that one does not get onto any of the drives, but being here for only two nights certainly limits the opportunity to take a drive at a specific time. I am pleased that you managed to get on a drive and it seems as though you really enjoyed it.

Your comments regarding the staff have been noted. There are actually only a handful of staff who display an apathetic attitude, however it is almost impossible to institute action against an anonymous staff member without a guest advising us, whilst they are still on the resort. Any instance of poor service or bad attitude should be reported immediately to a member of management, so that the offender can be identified and the appropriate action taken.

Thank you for your remarks about dinner. It is uncertain as to why the food would be less than hot at any time during the evening, as it is all kept either on the electric carving unit or on an electric warming plate. These have both been checked are in perfect working order, but the restaurant manager will monitor the situation.

Your favourable comments regarding the rooms, the turn down service and game drives are most welcome.

It is a great pity that I did not get to meet with you while you were still at the resort, so that we may have discussed these and any other matters of concern.

I like to offer my sincere apologies for the drop in standards which you experienced and trust that should you reconsider your decision to return, on your next visit to Kwa Maritane the resort will be of a standard more in keeping with your expectations.

Once again, I would like to thank you for taking the time and trouble to submit your review. You have certainly made some valuable comments which will assist us in improving our performance.
