“Okay stay but could have been cleaner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

The guest house is located in a decent location with lots of plants around creating quite a cool and calming environment. Also located reasonably close to the town and the nearby bistro. There's a small paddle pool and outdoor lounge area where you can relax and have a nespresso.

There were 4 of us who stayed here and we stayed in the Vivaldi cottage which sleeps 4 people at a pretty decent rate of R800 per night in total. There is one room and two single beds in the living room that sleeps a total of 4. There is a kitchenette which includes a fridge, hot plate and microwave as well as the essential cutlery. The bathroom was pretty big but there was not enough hot water for the four people and the water pressure was low. Toiletries and towels supplied.

The cottage could have been cleaner. There was cat hair everywhere including on the beds and the pillows! Also there was mould growing inside the coffee maker. The cottage was quite cluttered and as a result quite a bit of dust and cobwebs.

Going through my Trip Advisor review, I find yours which does make me feel very bad. Indeed. my staff and I pride ourselves in preparing the guest's bungalows and room with the best of care. This time, it seems that we failed (coffee machine incident) and I am extremely sorry for this. About the cats, yes I admit that we have quite quite a lot of them and in order to avoid any incident, I will see in the future to advise the guests in advance of this fact. But overall I do not agree to the fact that the bungalow was cluttered and dirty - by the way the carpets are authentic Kilims and Tunisian Kerouan -. It can be that you prefer some more minimalistic decoration and I respect this. I regret that you were not happy in my house hoping however to see you again another time.

My wife and I travel extensively outside the U.S. and because we love their type of accommodations we primarily travel to Europe. We were skeptical when friends suggested that we take a trip to the Kalahari desert in the Northern Cape South Africa. The couple recommended A La Fugue Guesthouse in Upington as a starting point and we prepared ourselves to "rough-it" in the wilds of Africa - which we did some days later in the Kalahari park - . But upon arrival in Upington, what a wonderful surprise! Our host Jacqueline seemed something of a celebrity about town for the moment we arrived in Upington our driver knew of La Fugue Guesthouse and raved about Jacqueline. We pulled up to the guesthouse and were charmed by the decor and the beautiful garden, like an oasis in the middle of the desert. We also felt as if some kind soul had transplanted a piece of European comfort amongst the wilds of the Kalahari. We were greeted by the gracious staff and felt immediately at home. Each room was furnished in a warm mixture of classic antiquity and comfort. The rooms were clean and well kept and we immediately jumped in bed for a nap. We awoke to sounds of nature and the smell of something marvelous wafting from the kitchen. Jacqueline, to our surprise, had set a table befitting some of the finest European accommodations. We intermingled with the other guests and were served the best meal we encountered in all our travels in Africa ( Jacqueline's taste in wine was also not too shabby). After dinner we enjoyed the beautiful pool and wonderful conversation with our host. It was a great pleasure to enjoy such kind wisdom from a stranger. Overall, we would highly recommend A La Fugue to any traveler. Great staff, clean accommodations and the host Jacqueline is more than worth the trip.

Since the opening of my guesthouse, It has been very rare to welcome guests from the USA and I was happy to help you to learn a little more about this wonderfull country of South Africa. I really do hope to welcome you another time and remain at your disposal to help you organising your trip. With my very best regards. Jacqueline Castella

We stayed here on the 31st March 2012 and the accommodation cetainly did not live up the the expected rave reviews. It was not as bad as the "terrible" review suggested but certainly not wonderful. The rooms were very cramped and crowded, too many animals everywhere (and I am an animal-lover). Cat sprayed in the one bedroom and left an unpleasant smell and the carpets were in serious need of updating. Bathrooms ok towels really mismatched and old which I found off-putting. The garden was lush and green and the pool area nice. Would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Perhaps spend a bit more and choose one of the many Guest Houses along the riverfront closer to the...

I am very sorry to read that you did not have a nice stay at la Fugue. My staff and I take pride in keeping our bungalows and rooms very clean and I usually personally inspect everything before the arrival of the guests; but maybe this very day something went wrong and I do apologize for this. Nevertheless I will take your observations into consideration about some usefull upgradings. Jacqueline CASTELLA

I spend 2 weeks in this place. It was beautiful about everything, eating, accomodation and Jacky is the best woman I have known.

All is good, very clean, and supper ambiance in the garden in the summer kitchen.

I can recommand this place without any hesitation.

La Fuge is such a lovely place! We had a wonderful time there me and my three children. The house and guest rooms are tastefully decorated and the host is so welcoming. I can only advise people to stay at La Fugue on their trip to South Africa! Martine

We use this adress every year before our safari in the Kalahari. We are wildlife photographer.
La Fugue Guest House is a very good plan.
Jackie's hospitality is fantastic and for the french guests that's a plus.
The place is away from the city. Perfect for relaxation. Beautiful garden and excellent home diner.
We recommend this address.

I want to thank Jacky about her wonderful hospitality in her B&B. After 1 week, I was like a new woman ! I slept so well and she's so friendly with everybody ! The lapa, outside near the swimming pool is so nice and I replenished in the garden.

When you ask her to prepare a breakfast or a dinner... these are fine and gourmet meals ! Miam ! She speaks English, French and German an this is very helpful.

I was in the "chalet" and everything is in : coffee & tee maker, fridge, microwave, TV !Waouh ! I loved it !

Jacky : Thanks a lot for everything you make for my stay in your guesthouse ! I hope to come back soon ! ;-)

With much love.
Flo
