“Not a hole lot to smile about”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

Being a recent Prokard sign up, we thought it would be good to stop over on the way through to our family gathering in Gauteng. I duly booked with express instructions to secure us adjoining rooms, which are available in this hotel. (if you get it right a nice touch for the family). Unfortunately there was a communication issue between Protea Hotels booking and the hotel, which meant that our adjoining rooms has already been allocated. Upon my insistence the staff at the hotel worked hard to move someone into another room and after about 45 minutes we were duly booked in.
The rooms are very comfortable, and the bathrooms perfectly adequate. We liked the fact that there was access to the big hole attraction right next door, which was where we spent the bulk of our full day in KImberley. I feel that for what you get we paid too much, and next time would seek out a Bed and Breakfast or even a self catering chalet for the family.
We did find the service in the restaurant exceptionally good, with the waitrons particularly friendly and willing to help. If you as a traveller are prepared to engage with the staff then they will give you plenty back in return.
Overall an OK experience, but not sure we would do it again...

Room Tip: Try to avoid anything too close to the reception and dining room area. we were unfortunate enough to...

You dont have a lot of hotel options in Kimberley. This protea hotel is much older. Lower your standards there will be no five star service here.
We arrived friday night, the hotel is only 2 storeys up and there are no elevators. Watch the stairs they are quite steep if you are wearing heels.
The carpets in the rooms are quite dirty, they need to be changed. Two comfortable double beds, the room is spacious, there is only a bathtub no shower in the bathroom. The following morning we got to breakfast at 9am (breakfast finishes at 9:30am). Breakfast is not included in the room rate, you pay extra for it. There were no set tables, we had to wait for someone to be called fromthe kitchen to come set the table. The warm stuff (bacon, sausage, chicken livers ets) were now cold. There was no brown or rye or any other bread besides white bread in the bin. I had to ask for brown bread to make toast. The fruit in the fruit salad did not look fresh at all. We asked for coffee, we were shown the coffee station. The warm milk was sooo cold and it has a layer of crust on top, i had black tea. Breakfasat was not nice at all and it was R135 per person. This is more expensive than a poper buffet breakfast at a five star hotel in Johannesburg????
They also charge you R30 for parking even though you park in the hotel parking??
I was not happy at all with this hotel relative to the price i paid which was R1946 for two nights and 1 morning of breakfast.

We checked availability and rates using a smartphone on Protea’s own site, but ended up getting a significantly better rate just walking in; the “best rate” is posted on a sign on the front of the hotel (as is the case with many Protea hotels), but this was open to further negotiation at reception. This is a pretty standard Protea budget hotel, offering clean, quiet rooms with undercover, off-street parking for R30/night. The bonus of staying here is Mario’s restaurant just across the road (see separate review). We arrived in Kimberly on a Saturday evening and drove around for a while having a look for any action, but the whole town seemed very quiet. The only other option we looked at was the Road Lodge next to the casino on the main northbound road leading out town, but it was full.

This hotel used to such a nice and friendly place! I have been so many times but recently their service is so poor! The person who checked us in wad rude, we waited forever for our room service order and during breakfast it took at least 15 minutes to get my tea! I'm disappointed by the service!
