“Friendly Staff - Rooms a little tired”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

Stayed just for one night - on business, Extensive and secure grounds suitable for families with play ares and outdoor pool. Check-in and bar staff very friendly and bar/restaurant in main building all very nice. Bar meal was excellent.
Rooms are "motel style" in separate blocks - with parking outside the rooms.
Had a ground floor room with view of the garden which would be nice in Summer.
Decor in rooms is a little tired although clean and no complaints.

Hotel Winkler
28 – 31 March 2012

I recently spent a long weekend at The Winkler (two nights complimentary (prize) and one night paid for by me). I stayed there before and have some wonderful memories of happy days with my family at this "old girl". However, I was very disappointed at the downturn in quality, such as:

1. The staff were friendly and tried to be as helpful as I recall from my previous visit. However, I was appalled at the general lack of service and their extremely poor knowledge of the area in they live in, which I consider vital in this industry.

2. Rooms - Upon arrival at the hotel it appeared that only one guest was expected, although the prize was for two people for two nights. (I paid for the third night’s stay). I had also requested twin beds, was given a King and then had to wait while they changed the room – three times – and then found only one bed had been turned back and only one chocolate provided!
o Despite requests each morning, we were still given coffee/tea/water etc. for one occupant only.
o On the second night upon return from Kruger Park we were locked out of the room. No explanation was given but staff rectified the problem immediately. Beds were not turned down, no chocolate at all.
o On the third night, the bed had been made up beneath the duvet, the sheets were exactly as we left them in the morning. I think this is unforgivable.

· Dining room

o On the Saturday evening we chose to dine at the hotel. I requested the pasta with chilli, olives, Parmesan cheese and oregano, as advertised on the menu. I was horrified to receive Penne pasta in olive oil with a side dish consisting of a mess of tomato with cheese and olives mixed in. Upon returning the dish, the chef came to the table to advise they had run out of oregano and anyway, the ingredients on the menu were only highlights. I have had this dish all over the country and it always consists only of "the highlights".
o Funny thing thought, there is a lovely picture window in the buffet service area looking over a little herb garden with each herb labelled, including a row of oregano!!
o When asked about the vegetables of the day we were told we could have pumpkin and what looks like cucumber, which turned out to be baby marrow.
o When I spoke to the head chef the next morning he was rather defensive and advised I should understand that staff are being trained. I realise this is necessary, but it should not affect the diners!

Curio Shop - I browsed the store on at least three occasions, and each time was left to my own devices for between 10 and 20 minutes before anyone deigned to come into the store to provide assistance. This store is left unattended for most of the day and service is very indifferent.

Tourism - I asked about the area and best places to visit – and was told to visit Hazyview and White River. No mention of Pilgrim's Rest, Kruger Park, God's Window and/or the Panorama Route. Staff should (1) be given a one day training session on tourism; and (2) be taken on a one day excursion to see these sights so that they are better informed of what to recommend to tourists. This will improve loyalty and enthusiasm for their jobs, which in turn will rub off on tourists and make them want to return to The Winkler.

The hotel itself has been well refurbished but it all falls flat when service doesn't match up.

Dear Janineducie,

I sincerely regret to hear we have not lived up to your expectations when staying with us in March. I can assure you that the issues experienced are not reflective of the levels of service and product standards we strive to offer to every single guest at our hotel. Each service lapse noted by your kind self such as the room allocation, service levels in the souvenir shop and local / regional knowledge of staff, will be carefully investigated and addressed.

I will personally contact you to see where we failed in our communication after you had contacted our head offices in recent months.

The entire TEAM at the hotel does hope you will allow us the opportunity to be of service to you again when visiting the Mpumalanga region again to restore your confidence in our operations and the Protea brand.

Yours sincerely,

Jason Hobbs - Acting General Manager

Even though the grounds are very spacious, and the atrium looks spectacular when you walk in, this hotel leaves a lot to be desired. The staff are not consistent in service, and the food was not up to the 4 star rating that they have. The rooms are okay... but not very spacious, and the hotel is noisy! There is just no getting away from it, and the staff were responsible for most of it. Very disappointing. The house-keeping and a few select staff were amazing, but unfortunately they could not make up for other shortcomings.

Our tour group with SMARTOURS was robbed while at dinner. 4 rooms had jammed safes, they took cameras, cell phones, credit card receipts and jewelry.......Don't feel too protected as it was an inside job and 2 security guards were arrested. The 'turn-down' maid goes in the front door and unlocks the back door and leaves the curtains open..

Room Tip: there are no safe rooms here.

Our room was robbed while we were eating dinner in their restaurant. Money and camera were stolen. Others in our tour group experienced the same.

Dear Mr and Ms Burmester,

On behalf of the entire team at Protea Hotel The Winkler, we sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to you by the room theft experienced while staying with us. I can assure you that the incident is certainly not reflective of the levels of safety and security we strive to offer to every single guest of our hotel, nor is it a true reflection of the genuine hospitality offered by the people of Mpumalanga South Africa.

We regard this incident in a serious light, and assure you that the incident is currently carefully investigated by local authorities and senior management at the hotel.

Yours faithfully,

I loved this hotel for the most part. The grounds, lobby, pool, etc were wonderful....very peaceful. The rooms were good, nothing special but very adequate. Some minor problems. While the internet is free, you have to use it the lobby/bar area and it is VERY slow. Had trouble with hot water in the shower. It took forever to warm up and the water pressure was very light. I was not impressed with the buffet dinner but I don't normal like buffets anyway. My minor problem are VERY minor so don't let them influence you not to stay here as this is still a very nice hotel and I would recommend it to anyone.

Hi Chris,

Great comments from such an experienced TripAdvisor reviewer! Much appreciated...

Apologies for the lack of sufficient water pressure during your stay. This issue has already been discussed with the maintenance team and addressed accordingly. I am also glad to inform you that we are in the process of an extensive menu and buffet service revamp, in order to continue to meet and exceed the expectations of our guests.

Looking forward hosting you again upon your next trip to the Lowveld, one of the amazing parts of lovely South Africa...

Hotel grounds are lovely (small terrace area off patio door of rooms) and kids well catered for both in terms of food and facilities. Nice bar snacks / area. Comfortable room with all you need for a one night stop en route to Kruger. Park the car opposite entrance to room so easy to unlaod luggage etc. Reception very friendly and efficient. Decent buffet breakfast.
